The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly left Spotify and Netflix executives feeling “underwhelmed” due to their alleged lack of productivity in content creation.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's inexperience as producers has hindered their ventures into content production beyond their personal narratives.
Sources familiar with the situation claim that both streaming platforms have been disappointed by the couple's insufficient output.
Employees and associates of Archewell, the Sussexes' foundation, mentioned a lack of direction within the organization and highlighted the couple's apparent surprise at the level of effort required to complete entertainment projects.
Recently, it was announced that the partnership between Spotify and Archewell Audio, spanning three years, has concluded without renewal.
Under this $20 million deal signed in 2020, the Sussexes only produced one series of Meghan's podcast, Archetypes, comprising 12 episodes.
Despite discussions for a second series, it did not materialize.
Taylor Swift reportedly turned down an invitation to appear on Meghan's podcast, with Spotify executives expressing frustration over the delay in conceptualizing the show and assembling a team.
The couple also failed to meet the productivity targets for the full payout from the deal.
Responding to these challenges, a spokesperson for Archewell acknowledged the company's ongoing evolution in its startup phase, emphasizing readiness and focus moving forward.
Notably, the foundation has made strategic changes, including appointing Tracy Ryerson as the head of scripted content following Mandana Dayani's departure.
Reports suggest that Netflix may not renew its $100 million contract with the Sussexes signed in 2020, slated to conclude in 2025.
While the couple envisioned creating various content for the platform, their output has been limited to the docuseries Harry and Meghan, which premiered in late 2022.
Despite setbacks, Netflix emphasized the value of its partnership with Archewell, citing the successful debut of Harry and Meghan.
The couple's proposed projects, including an animated children's show and podcast ideas, faced rejection, pointing to challenges in expanding content beyond their personal stories.
Criticism of the Sussexes' business acumen surfaced, with executive Bill Simmons labeling them as “f***ing grifters” on his podcast.
However, Meghan's recent signing with major talent agency WME indicates continued opportunities in film, television production, and brand partnerships.
Having stepped back from the royal family in 2021 to pursue financial independence, Harry and Meghan reside in Montecito, California, with their children.
Their journey reflects both struggles and potential for growth in the competitive landscape of entertainment and media.
