Hilary Swank, renowned for her outstanding performances, has opened up about her Oscar-winning role in the acclaimed 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry.
Surprisingly, she revealed that she was paid a mere $3000 for her exceptional portrayal.
During an appearance on the Netflix show Chelsea, Swank shared her experiences, stating, “When I did Boys Don’t Cry, I was just 24 years old, and I made $3000.”
Little did she know that this low payment would have significant consequences.
Swank further explained, “To be eligible for health insurance coverage, you need to earn at least $5000.
So, it was only when I attempted to get a prescription filled that I discovered I didn’t have health insurance.”
Despite her Academy Award win, she found herself without the essential insurance coverage.
Now aged 42, Swank has amassed a remarkable career with two Academy Awards for Best Actress.
However, her journey wasn’t without challenges and negotiations.
“After winning my second Academy Award, I was offered a role in a movie.
Surprisingly, the male lead, who lacked critical success, was offered a staggering $10 million, while I was offered a mere $500,000,” Swank shared.
Faced with this unfair disparity, she stood her ground and declined the role.
“I refused and they ultimately cast a newcomer who agreed to do it for $50,000,” Swank revealed.
“By doing so, they saved $450,000, perhaps to fulfill the male lead’s bonus requirements.”
