Margot Robbie's rise to stardom can be traced back to her role in the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Directed by Martin Scorsese, the movie became a commercial success and earned Leonardo DiCaprio his sixth Oscar nomination.
It also introduced Robbie to the wider world of cinema, propelling her from her humble beginnings on the Australian soap opera “Neighbours” to the dazzling heights of Hollywood.
Since then, Robbie has collaborated with renowned directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Greta Gerwig, James Gunn, and Damien Chazelle.
Her versatility as an actor has allowed her to seamlessly transition between mainstream blockbusters and independent films, earning critical acclaim for her performance in “I, Tonya” and achieving cultural icon status for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad.”
However, it was her captivating performance in “The Wolf of Wall Street” that truly captivated audiences.
Playing Naomi Lapaglia, the seductive wife of the film's protagonist, Robbie stole every scene she was in.
Director Martin Scorsese described her audacity as something that “surprises and challenges and just burns like a brand,” leaving a lasting impression on the cast and crew.
To secure the role, Robbie had to audition alongside the formidable Leonardo DiCaprio.
Nervous but determined, she knew she had to make a lasting impression.
In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, she revealed her mindset during the audition: “You have literally 30 seconds left in this room, and if you don't do something impressive, nothing will ever come of it.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it.”
Acting opposite DiCaprio was no easy feat, and Robbie found herself caught up in the intensity of their scenes together.
Describing the experience, she said, “I start screaming at him and he's yelling back at me.
And he's really scary.
I can barely keep up.”
As the audition neared its end, DiCaprio delivered a line that pushed Robbie to take drastic measures: “You should be happy to have a husband like me.
Now get over here and kiss me.”
In a bold move, Robbie decided to slap DiCaprio instead.
Reflecting on the moment, she shared, “So I walk up really close to his face, and then I'm like, ‘Maybe I should kiss him.
When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?'
But another part of my brain clicks, and I just go, Whack!
I hit him in the face.
And then I scream, ‘F*** you!'
And that's not in the script at all.
The room just went dead silent, and I froze.”
Fortunately, Scorsese and DiCaprio were impressed by Robbie's audacious act, and she was ultimately rewarded with a role in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Her performance in the film solidified her status as a talented and fearless actor, delivering a truly remarkable supporting performance.
Fans of Robbie eagerly anticipate her upcoming projects.
In December, she will star alongside Brad Pitt and Tobey Maguire in Damien Chazelle's “Babylon,” and she is set to co-star with Ryan Gosling in Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated Barbie movie.
