In a recent episode of his SiriusXM morning show, Howard Stern responded to the resurfacing of a 27-year-old skit in which he wore blackface.
The 66-year-old shock jock jokingly pleaded insanity and acknowledged his reputation as one of the craziest individuals in radio.
Stern also sarcastically congratulated those who discovered the old footage that was already well-known.
The controversy began when filmmaker Tariq Nasheed shared a video of a 1993 Howard Stern TV special, in which the broadcaster donned blackface to parody actor Ted Danson.
Danson had previously worn blackface at a Friars Club roast honoring comedian Whoopi Goldberg, whom he was dating at the time.
Stern's skit featured his co-host Robin Quivers and comedic actor Sherman Hemsley, with Stern repeatedly using the N-word.
Donald Trump Jr., whom Stern has recently mocked, shared the video on Instagram and commented, “Yikes!”
He also suggested that if a conservative used similar language, it would be detrimental to their career.
Stern speculated that Trump Jr. and his father may have been involved in promoting the clip as retaliation for his criticism of the Trump administration.
Stern admitted that the clip was from his “New Year's Rotten Eve Pageant” and expressed surprise that people were still discussing it after 30 years.
Quivers, who is black, mentioned that she had forgotten about the skit and denied any attempt to hide it, claiming she barely remembered doing it.
Stern emphasized how years of psychotherapy have changed his broadcasting approach and admitted that he cringes when watching his old work.
He asserted that he wouldn't do something like the Danson skit today.
While Stern acknowledged that there may be other controversial content in his archives, he maintained that he never did anything behind the scenes.
He then took a dig at President Trump, contrasting his own on-air behavior with Trump's infamous “locker room talk” comment.
Quivers expressed her desire for someone to uncover real dirt on Trump that he didn't say himself on television or radio, to which Stern responded that it would be nearly impossible.
Howard Stern has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration, particularly regarding its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic impact.
He has accused Trump of lacking leadership and secretly despising his most devoted followers.
In response to Trump Jr.'s claim that Stern had changed, the shock jock humorously mocked him, highlighting the influence of Trump Sr. on his son.
It is evident that Howard Stern continues to stir controversy, but he remains unapologetic about his past actions.
Despite expressing regret for his old work, he stands by the fact that he never hid anything from his audience.
The blackface skit may have resurfaced, but Stern owns it, acknowledging that it was a different time and that he has evolved since then.
