Radio host Howard Stern has addressed a resurfaced television special from 1993 in which he appeared in blackface and used racist language.
Stern spoke about the controversial performance on his SiriusXM show, admitting that what he did was “crazy” and expressing his regret for not handling it differently.
The sketch, which took place during a New Year's Eve special, was a satirical take on Ted Danson's blackface appearance at a Friar's Club Roast of Whoopi Goldberg.
Stern, who has been on the radio for nearly four decades, acknowledged that he has evolved since then and has changed his approach to comedy.
Stern emphasized that he would not wear blackface if given the chance to do it all over again.
He recognized the impact therapy had on his personal growth, leading him to transform his communication style and tone down his show.
The radio host expressed his dismay at Donald Trump Jr. reposting the controversial segment on Twitter, questioning why the Trump family has not undergone therapy and made changes in their own behavior.
Stern also expressed his support for ongoing protests against racism and police brutality, stating that he is excited about the potential for widespread change.
He commended the advancements in gay rights and the progress being made through the Black Lives Matter movement.
Reflecting on the disturbing incident of George Floyd being choked to death, Stern described it as sickening and appalling, highlighting the need for real change in society.
During the discussion on his show, Stern's longtime co-host Robin Quivers, who was referred to using a racial slur in the 1993 sketch, shared her perspective on the controversy.
Quivers, a proponent of free speech, stated that she refused to let one word define her or keep her out of any room.
She acknowledged Stern's evolution over the years and highlighted his support for inclusion, women's rights, and the LGBTQ cause.
While Stern did not offer a direct apology for the blackface performance, he acknowledged feeling discomfort when looking back at his past actions.
He distanced himself from hate groups that may have misconstrued his intentions and emphasized his commitment to growth and change.
Stern's response to the resurfaced controversy demonstrates his recognition of the need for personal development and societal progress.
