Notting Hill enthusiasts might be dismayed to uncover the ongoing clash between romantic comedy icons Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.
The '90s cinematic gem is widely celebrated as a cherished romcom classic, making it surprising for many to learn that the lead actors are embroiled in anything but an amicable relationship, as reported by the Mirror.
Their feud reportedly stems from their fervent kissing scenes in the movie.
The endearing narrative of Richard Curtis's quintessential film, Notting Hill, revolves around Will Thacker, an ordinary bookstore proprietor who falls deeply for the Hollywood sensation Anna Scott.
A whirlwind romance unfolds after the glamorous Anna impulsively kisses Will, setting off a series of events that alter both their destinies forever.
Off-screen, Hugh and Julia allegedly maintain a somewhat strained rapport.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Hugh was asked by a viewer if he and Julia stayed in touch, to which he gestured negatively, hinting at their lack of communication.
The native of Hammersmith confessed, “I might have been, but I've probably poked fun at the size of her mouth too much.
By now, she might detest me.”
At 63, Hugh humorously mentioned facing challenges while kissing Julia due to the dimensions of her mouth, jesting about hearing a faint echo during their intimate scenes.
Despite his jests, he complimented Julia, acknowledging, “She truly… she was exceptional and exceptionally beautiful.”
In the same discussion, Hugh expressed his irritation towards the overly polite persona often associated with him because of his iconic roles, stating, “It irks me when individuals perceive me as nice, timid, or a courteous English gentleman — these clichés make my blood boil.
I'm not a saint and I believe people need to recognize that.
It's exasperating.”
Contrastingly, Hugh has been effusive in his praise for his former Bridget Jones's Diary co-star, Renée Zellweger, whom he lauded as an adept kisser.
Reflecting on a competitive kissing rivalry with co-star Colin Firth, Hugh humorously remarked during a 2014 interview with the Mail Online, “Renee needs to be asked who she favored.
I believe Colin was trying too hard.”
