In a shocking revelation, actor Hugh Grant has admitted to cheating on his then-girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley with prostitute Divine Brown back in 1995.
Grant, now 60 years old, confessed that he engaged in the illicit affair because he was feeling upset after watching one of his own movies.
The scandalous incident made headlines when Grant and Divine were arrested by police during their rendezvous in a car parked near Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
During a recent interview on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, the British star opened up about the events leading up to the affair.
Grant attributed his actions to his unease after watching his Hollywood debut film, Nine Months.
He explained that he had a bad feeling about the movie and questioned his own performance in it.
Despite acknowledging the brilliance of his co-stars Julianne Moore and Robin Williams, Grant was disappointed in himself and found himself in a bad frame of mind.
Feeling down, Grant decided to drown his sorrows, which ultimately led to his encounter with Divine Brown.
He described it as a moment of weakness and disappointment in himself.
Grant expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch – and one thing led to another.
I just was disappointed in myself.
I don't know what was going on.
It was called Nine Months.”
Despite Grant's concerns, Nine Months went on to achieve success at the box office, debuting at number 3 in the US and grossing $138.5 million worldwide.
The film played a significant role in catapulting Grant to superstardom.
Reflecting on this, Grant said, “The film did alright at the box office, in fact I think it did quite well, and that's all Hollywood really cares about.”
At the time of the scandal, Grant was famously arrested near Sunset Boulevard after engaging in s**ual activities with Divine Brown in his car.
He was fined $1,000 and required to attend an education program on AIDS.
Brown, whose real name is Stella Marie Thompson, received a 180-day prison sentence for lewd conduct in a public place and for violating her probation for previous prostitution charges.
In a statement following the incident, Grant expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to the people he had hurt and embarrassed.
He referred to his behavior as “completely insane.”
Meanwhile, Brown capitalized on the publicity surrounding the scandal and made approximately $1 million.
Despite the tumultuous event, Grant and Hurley remained together for several years before ending their relationship in 2000.
They have managed to remain close friends throughout the years.
Reflecting on their bond, Grant described their relationship as that of brother and sister.
He acknowledged the challenging early years they experienced together when they had no work and lived in a small flat, which brought them closer.
Looking back on the affair, Grant admitted to being foolish and not offering any excuses for his behavior.
He accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged that he had made a mistake.
Grant now serves as the godfather to Hurley's 18-year-old son Damian, whose father, Steve Bing, tragically took his own life last year.
