Carole Landis, a Hollywood legend, experienced a love life that mirrored the struggles she faced in her professional career.
According to Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Landis had already been married and divorced three times and was in the midst of her fourth divorce when she embarked on a relationship with Rex Harrison.
Additionally, she battled ongoing health issues caused by amoebic dysentery contracted during her time with the USO, as noted on the Carole Landis — Hollywood Legend website.
Following a dinner with Harrison, Landis returned to her apartment and tragically overdosed on Seconal, a barbiturate, at the age of 29, as reported by TCM.
Before taking her own life, she left a note for her mother expressing deep remorse and acknowledging that there was no other way out, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Approximately ten hours later, Harrison discovered Landis collapsed on the bathroom floor, as mentioned on TCM.
Despite denying any romantic involvement with Landis to both the police and the press, Harrison attributed her death to “general financial problems” in an interview with The San Francisco Examiner.
He insisted that they were merely good friends.
However, doubts arose regarding the timeline provided by Harrison.
Some speculated that he may have arrived at Landis’ residence before her passing and failed to intervene, as reported by the Express.
Harrison went on to achieve great success in his film and stage career before his death at the age of 82 in 1990, according to Britannica.
The New York Times confirms that Harrison was married six times throughout his life.
