Just a few months after successfully overcoming throat cancer, a picture of Michael Douglas holding what appears to be a cigarette near his lips has caught the attention of Star Magazine.
This has raised concerns about his health once again, especially since he had just started to regain a healthy complexion.
Back in 2010, Douglas revealed that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer and had undergone various treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.
The reason why many are worried now is because, as a survivor of stage IV cancer, it seems he may have fallen back into the very habit that initially put his health at risk.
In an interview with David Letterman in August 2010, Douglas admitted to having a habit of smoking and drinking, both of which are often linked to throat cancer.
However, a month later, he told the UK's Daily Mirror that he believed an excessive amount of stress played a major role in his illness.
“Although this type of cancer can be caused by alcohol, tobacco, or a certain s**ually transmitted infection, I personally attribute it to stress.
I've had a very stressful year on multiple fronts, some of which were public and some were not,” Douglas said.
If the white stick-like object in Douglas' hand is indeed a cigarette, it could be attributed to his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who also struggles with the same addiction.
The Daily Mail recently published photos of the couple on a yacht in Europe, with Zeta-Jones seen holding a cigarette while walking alongside her husband.
Despite being cancer-free since early 2011, doctors have warned Douglas, according to the Daily Mail, that he needs to take certain precautions to prevent a recurrence of the disease.
It is our hope that the white object in Douglas' hand was simply a piece of gum, rather than a cigarette.
