Criticism is mounting against actor Jim Carrey after his recent comments about Will Smith's slap incident at the Oscars.
Carrey, 60, expressed his disapproval of Smith's actions, stating that the actor should have been arrested for hitting Chris Rock during the awards ceremony.
However, Carrey's remarks have sparked accusations of hypocrisy due to a resurfaced video showing him forcibly kissing Alicia Silverstone at the MTV Movie Awards in 1997.
In an interview with CBS host Gayle King, Carrey criticized Smith's behavior, calling it a selfish moment that overshadowed the achievements of others at the Oscars.
He even jokingly mentioned that he would sue Smith for $200 million because the video of the incident would be widely circulated and remembered.
Following Carrey's comments, a video from the MTV Movie Awards in 1997 has gained attention on Twitter.
The video shows Carrey accepting an award and forcefully kissing Alicia Silverstone, who was presenting the trophy at the time.
Carrey was 35 years old, while Silverstone was 20.
The actor's actions in the video have drawn condemnation and accusations of hypocrisy, given his stance on Smith's slap incident.
It is worth noting that most posts referring to the video incorrectly state Silverstone's age.
The Independent reached out to Carrey and Silverstone for comment, but no responses have been received thus far.
Reports from the time suggest that Carrey apologized to Silverstone backstage, as she was left feeling humiliated.
Social media users have been quick to point out the discrepancy between Carrey's criticism of Smith and his own past behavior.
They question how Carrey can express disgust over a slap while having engaged in a forced kiss himself.
Despite the controversy surrounding the incident, Carrey's career seemed to remain unaffected.
Critics argue that the incident did not impact his professional success.
Many also highlight Silverstone's disgusted reaction after the forced kiss.
Carrey is not the only actor who has forcefully kissed an awards presenter.
In 2003, Adrien Brody surprised Halle Berry with a kiss after winning Best Actor for The Pianist.
Berry later described her initial reaction as confusion and disbelief.
Smith's slap incident became the talk of this year's Oscars ceremony, drawing widespread criticism from the Hollywood community.
However, Smith received a standing ovation and delivered an emotional Best Actor speech for his performance in King Richard.
Following the incident, Smith issued an apology to Rock, who stated that he was still processing what had happened during his first stand-up show since the incident.
Sources close to Rock claim that he had no knowledge of Pinkett Smith's condition.
The Academy, in response to the incident, announced disciplinary proceedings against Smith, citing violations of its Standards of Conduct.
These violations include inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.
Footage of Rock and Pinkett Smith in the aftermath of the incident has also surfaced online.
Carrey has since clarified his comments while promoting his new film Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
