Jim Caviezel, known for his role as Jesus in Mel Gibson's 2004 hit film “The Passion of the Christ,” revealed that he has faced rejection from the entertainment industry following his decision to star in the controversial movie.
Prior to portraying the iconic religious figure, Caviezel was a familiar face in the movie scene, having appeared in films like the 2002 remake of “The Count of Monte Cristo” and the 2001 romantic drama “Angel Eyes,” where he shared the screen with Jennifer Lopez.
However, the actor disclosed during a speaking engagement at a church in Orlando, Florida, that he has experienced isolation within Hollywood after accepting the lead role in Gibson's project.
According to Caviezel, Gibson initially offered him the part but later called him back, imploring him not to take it by saying, “You'll never work in this town again.”
Unfazed, Caviezel responded by emphasizing the importance of embracing challenges, stating, “We all have to embrace our crosses.”
He further reflected on the enduring controversial nature of Jesus, asserting, “Jesus is as controversial now as he has ever been.
Not much has changed in 2,000 years.”
A devout Christian, Caviezel shared with the audience at the First Baptist Church of Orlando that he had come to terms with the repercussions his acting career had suffered as a result of taking a stand for his beliefs.
“We have to give up our names, our reputations, our lives to speak the truth,” he expressed.
Despite criticizing Gibson as “a horrible sinner,” he advocated for support rather than judgment towards the actor turned filmmaker, stating, “Mel Gibson doesn't need your judgment, he needs your prayers.”
“The Passion of the Christ” achieved remarkable success at the box office in 2004, grossing over $600 million worldwide and drawing significant audiences, particularly among religious viewers.
However, the film also sparked controversy, with some critics accusing Gibson of promoting antisemitism.
