In a shocking turn of events, Joel Osteen’s Lakewood megachurch in Texas is now under scrutiny for allegations of child s** abuse.
Despite the immense popularity and success of Osteen and his church, recent revelations paint a disturbing picture of what may have been happening behind closed doors.
RadarOnline.com has obtained court documents revealing that in 2010, Lakewood was at the center of a Child Protective Services investigation due to an accusation of “inappropriate” s**ual conduct involving a special needs child and a church volunteer.
According to the court documents, Alvaro Daniel Guzman served as a volunteer in the special needs children’s ministry at Lakewood, known as the Champions Club.
On February 13, 2010, another volunteer witnessed Guzman engaging in inappropriate behavior with the child assigned to him.
Disturbed by what she saw, the volunteer reported the incident to her superiors, who advised her to contact Child Protective Services and provide them with a detailed account of the incident.
Following the report, CPS launched an investigation into the matter.
Lakewood staff subsequently met with Guzman on February 17, informing him that he would no longer be allowed to serve as a volunteer due to the serious allegations against him.
Houston Police detectives also interviewed Lakewood staff regarding the incident on February 25.
By May 5, 2011, the Harris County District Court issued an arrest warrant for Guzman, charging him with indecency towards a child based on the sworn complaint filed on February 13, 2010.
He was arrested and later released on $10,000 bail.
However, the grand jury failed to indict him on July 21, resulting in his discharge from the case.
Nevertheless, the legal battle was not over for Guzman.
In February 2012, he filed a $10 million lawsuit against Lakewood, alleging negligence on the part of the church for failing to properly investigate the allegations against him and failing to secure video evidence that could have exonerated him.
Guzman claimed that as a result of these failures, he suffered significant damages, including lost wages, damage to his reputation, and emotional distress.
In his complaint, he even suggested that similar incidents had occurred at Lakewood in the past, although he provided no evidence to support this claim.
When Guzman’s attorney requested details of any previous incidents similar to his client’s case, Lakewood objected, stating that the request was vague and overbroad.
They also objected to a question regarding whether there had been any other child abuse accusations within the church’s facility, claiming it lacked specificity.
The case ultimately came to an end on December 14, 2012, when a judge granted a summary judgment in favor of Lakewood.
The judge cited a lack of evidence provided by Guzman to support his claims.
This ruling marked the conclusion of a tumultuous legal battle between Guzman and the renowned megachurch.
