Julia Roberts Faces Criticism Over “Disgusting” Remarks

Hollywood underwent a significant transformation in the late 20th century, moving away from the studio system to a realm dominated by movie stars.

This shift became more evident as the industry approached the new millennium, giving rise to iconic stars like , , , , and , whose mere mention could draw audiences to theaters.

Although Roberts had been active in the industry since the late 1980s, her true breakthrough came in the early 1990s with the release of the hit film Pretty Woman in 1990.

Her captivating performance alongside earned her an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Leading Actress,' propelling her to stardom.

Following her success, Roberts collaborated on several high-profile projects.

She worked with Joel Schumacher on Flatliners in 1990 and starred in 's Hook alongside and Dustin Hoffman.

Her collaboration with Robert Altman for The Player in 1992 solidified her status as a sensation in Hollywood.

However, not all collaborations were pleasant for Roberts, as evidenced by her experience working with Nick Nolte on the 1994 film I Love Trouble.

The movie portrays two rival reporters forced to team up when faced with a national scandal.

Despite their on-screen chemistry, Roberts and Nolte's off-screen relationship was less than amicable, with tensions running high during filming.

Roberts did not shy away from expressing her frustrations, candidly telling The New York Times in 1993 about her strained dynamic with Nolte.

She described their initial interactions as contentious, noting that while Nolte could be charming, she found him “completely disgusting” at times.

Their mutual dislike for each other was palpable, adding an extra layer of complexity to their on-screen partnership.

In response, Nolte acknowledged the challenges they faced during the making of the film, attributing some of the friction to miscommunication and personal circumstances.

He confessed to Insider that their working relationship had its difficulties, hinting at his own role in the discord and acknowledging Roberts' marriage at the time as a contributing factor to the tension.

The 1994 movie I Love Trouble, featuring Roberts and Nolte in lead roles, failed to leave a lasting impact on audiences, despite their efforts to navigate their strained collaboration.

Despite their differences, both actors delivered performances that resonated with viewers, showcasing their professional commitment amidst personal conflicts.
