Hollywood actress Julia Roberts has become a symbol of marital bliss with her long-lasting marriage to husband Danny Moder since 2002.
The couple shares three children – twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 18, and son Henry, 16.
However, before finding her happily ever after, the 55-year-old actress had her fair share of high-profile relationships, including a short-lived first marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett from 1993-1995.
But it was Julia's infamous love triangle in 1991 that caused a sensation in the tabloids.
She called off her 10-month-long engagement to actor Kiefer Sutherland and shocked everyone by running away with his best friend, fellow actor Jason Patric, on what was supposed to be their wedding day.
Let's go back to the beginning.
Julia and Kiefer, now 56, first met in 1989 while co-starring in the film “Flatliners.”
They began dating shortly after Julia's breakup with her “Steel Magnolias” co-star Dylan McDermott and Kiefer's divorce from Camelia Kath.
In August 1990, the couple announced their engagement and planned to marry on June 14, 1991, in a grand ceremony surrounded by A-list guests at 20th Century Fox's Soundstage 14.
However, just three days before the wedding, Julia broke off the engagement, leaving everyone stunned.
On the day of the ceremony, Kiefer was seen moving out of Julia's Beverly Hills home.
Adding fuel to the fire, Julia was spotted flying to Ireland with Jason, Kiefer's close friend and co-star in the movie “The Lost Boys.”
When they returned to the States, Julia and Jason were recognized as a couple, but their relationship ended shortly after in 1992.
Julia was even dubbed the “runaway bride” years before the movie of the same name starring Richard Gere and herself hit the screens.
The controversy surrounding the love triangle continued for years, with Julia finally breaking her silence in a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone.
She expressed her frustration with the constant speculation about the timing and details of the broken engagement.
Despite all the rumors, Julia made it clear that people didn't want to know the truth.
Years later, the trio made amends.
Jason and Kiefer reunited in 2011 for a Broadway revival of “That Championship Season,” and in an interview, Jason clarified that there was never any animosity between them.
He dismissed all the fabricated stories surrounding their past relationships and emphasized that they have all moved on.
In a podcast episode in 2021, Jason jokingly whispered “Ireland” when asked about the trip he took with Julia.
However, he quickly clarified that falling in love is something beyond one's control, and he had nothing but respect and admiration for both Julia and Kiefer.
Reflecting on their broken engagement, Kiefer praised Julia's courage and acknowledged the challenges they faced due to her sudden rise to stardom following the massive success of “Pretty Woman.”
He recognized the immense pressure they were under during their relationship and commended Julia for having the strength to walk away from something that didn't feel right.
Since then, all parties involved have found love elsewhere.
Kiefer was married to Kelly Winn from 1996-2004 and has been engaged to Cindy Vela since 2014.
Jason had an on-and-off relationship with Danielle Schreiber from 2002-2012, with whom he shares a son.
Julia Roberts' love triangle may have caused a scandal in the past, but all three individuals have moved on and found happiness in their respective lives.
Despite the tabloid frenzy and public scrutiny, they have managed to maintain a level of respect and reconciliation over the years.
