Kate Winslet recently expressed her desire to go back in time and stand up to the media backlash she faced regarding the conclusion of the iconic movie “Titanic.”
A quarter of a century following the release of the award-winning film, Winslet is reflecting on the hurtful body-shaming remarks she had to endure from the press.
In the 1997 movie, Rose, portrayed by Winslet, survives the sinking ship, with the lingering criticism centering around the belief that there was space for her character's love interest, Jack (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), on the floating door she clung to.
Discussing this issue on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Winslet revealed how she was unfairly labeled as “too fat” to share the makeshift raft with Jack.
She lamented, “Why were they so cruel to me?
They were harsh.
I wasn't even overweight.”
Expressing her thoughts further, Winslet emphasized her wish to have confronted journalists about their treatment of her.
She expressed, “I would have stood up to them, I would have retorted, I would have firmly stated, ‘Do not subject me to this.
I am a young woman, my body is evolving, I am grappling with insecurities, I am fearful, do not exacerbate my struggles.' That's bullying and verging on abusive, I dare say.”
The esteemed actress, who has received both Emmy and Oscar accolades, disclosed that early on in her Hollywood journey, questions about her weight were a common occurrence before auditions.
Recalling these experiences to The Sunday Times, Winslet shared, “During my youth, my agent would receive inquiries about my weight,” highlighting her focus on being an actor capable of emoting and embracing a natural physique.
Reflecting on the evolution of media dynamics over the years, the star of “Avatar: The Way of Water” remarked on the heightened intensity of today's tabloid culture.
Winslet commented, “Dealing with intrusive tabloids like News of the World was challenging enough, but the situation has escalated now.” She pointed out the lack of validity in the adage that news becomes irrelevant quickly, emphasizing the lasting impact of past actions on public figures.
Addressing the challenges faced by young actors in the current landscape, Winslet empathized with the need to constantly guard against potential repercussions of one's actions, especially in the age of social media scrutiny.
In a candid conversation with The Guardian last year, Winslet recounted the harsh treatment she received from tabloid journalists during her ascent to stardom.
She recalled feeling vulnerable while still navigating her identity, as the media scrutinized her appearance, speculated on her weight, and published fabricated details about her dietary
