After six years of marriage, Katie Holmes made the unexpected decision to leave Tom Cruise, sending shockwaves around the world.
The Dawson's Creek actress rose to fame in the late nineties with her role as Joey Potter on the popular TV series.
As she prepares to discuss her life in the spotlight at the Tribeca Film Festival 2023 alongside Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, many wonder if she will reflect on her past marriage with Tom Cruise.
Their relationship was a constant topic of conversation and garnered extensive media coverage during their time together.
Katie and Tom welcomed their daughter, Suri Cruise, in April 2006.
When they separated six years later, Katie was granted primary custody of Suri.
Surprisingly, Tom admitted to being caught off guard by Katie's divorce filing, stating in a 2013 interview with German TV network ProSieben, “I didn't expect it.”
Despite his shock, he added, “Life is a tragicomedy.
You need to have a sense of humour.”
Reports at the time suggested that Katie decided to end the marriage to protect Suri due to concerns about Tom's involvement in Scientology.
Tom became a Scientologist after being introduced to the organization by his first wife, Mimi Rogers.
During a deposition for his defamation case against Bauer Media in 2012, Tom became visibly angered when questioned about Katie leaving him to protect Suri from Scientology.
He vehemently denied the assertion, stating, “There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”
However, when asked if Katie left because of Scientology or to safeguard Suri, he responded, “Did she say that?
That was one of the assertions, yes.”
The lawsuit was settled the following year, with a joint statement from Cruise and Bauer's attorneys clarifying that publications never intended to imply that Tom had abandoned Suri.
They expressed regret if anyone drew that inference from their articles.
In 2018, InTouch Weekly alleged that despite having visitation rights to see Suri ten days a month, Tom had not contacted her in years.
A source claimed, “Every person is allowed to see their child if they wanted to.
He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist.”
Katie Holmes was Tom Cruise's third wife.
Following his divorce from Mimi Rogers in 1990, he married Nicole Kidman, but they divorced in 2001.
