Kiefer Sutherland Praises Julia Roberts’ Courage for Leaving Him Before Their Wedding

Julia Roberts, a well-established actor with numerous successful films under her belt, and Kiefer Sutherland, best known for his role in the hit show 24, had a brief celebrity relationship that still garners attention today.

The couple had plans to tie the knot in the early '90s, but the news of their canceled engagement left fans shocked.

Their love story began on the set of the 1990 film Flatliners, where they fell for each other.

Both actors had recently ended their previous relationships, and it didn't take long for them to get engaged, with a wedding date set for June 1991.

News, the couple had planned to have their ceremony at Twentieth Century Fox's sound stage, which was transformed into a beautiful garden setting.

About 150 guests were expected to witness their vows.

However, the highly anticipated wedding never took place.

On the day they were supposed to get married, neither Sutherland nor Roberts showed up at the altar.

People noticed Sutherland moving his belongings out of their Hollywood home, while Roberts was in Dublin with Sutherland's best friend.

Reflecting on the broken engagement, Sutherland later described Roberts as an extraordinary person.

In a 2016 interview with People, he acknowledged the difficult time they went through.

He commended Roberts for having the courage to realize that getting married wasn't what she truly wanted amidst all the chaos surrounding their relationship.

Over the years, Sutherland has forgiven Roberts and still considers her to have one of the greatest laughs of all time.

He appreciates her ability to recognize how young and foolish they were back then.

He has also forgiven his friend who ran off with Roberts to Ireland.

Before his relationship with Roberts, Sutherland was married to Camelia Kath, with whom he shares a daughter named Sarah Sutherland, known for her role in Veep.

He later married Kelly Winn in 1996 but they separated.

Sutherland has since dated Bo Derek and is currently engaged to model/actor Cindy Vela.

As for Roberts, besides her brief marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett, she has had relationships with actors like Matthew Perry and Benjamin Bratt.

In 2000, she met Danny Moder, a cameraman on the set of The Mexican, and they tied the knot in 2002.

They have three children together: twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, born in 2004, and Henry, born in 2007.
