A well-known figure has joined the ongoing immigration debate, shedding light on the deteriorating living conditions of migrants in New York City.
Joe Germanotta, husband of Cynthia Germanotta and father of Grammy and Oscar-winning artist Lady Gaga, recently spoke out about the situation.
The affluent Upper West Side of New York City, where Joe and Cynthia have resided for 35 years and own Joanne Trattoria eatery, has become a temporary home to hundreds of migrants.
Joe shared his concerns in an interview with the New York Post.
According to Joe, the issues began when the Stratford Arms Hotel, previously used as a residence hall for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, was suddenly transformed into a shelter for 500 migrants.
This change occurred without any prior notice to the residents of the area, including Joe and Cynthia.
Joe described the whole operation as stealthy and rapid, with the migrants being bused in during the middle of the night, similar to their arrival in Westchester.
Joe highlighted various problems that have arisen since the migrants' arrival.
Block parties held outside the hotel continue until the early hours of the morning, leading to disturbances in the neighborhood.
Reckless riding of e-bikes and scooters on one-way streets has become a common occurrence, along with instances of prostitution.
Joe expressed concern over the catcalling of girls as young as 14 and the verbal abuse experienced by residents.
Additionally, the streets are now littered with trash, negatively impacting property values and leaving residents feeling helpless.
Joe lamented that the migrants have essentially taken over the neighborhood, stating, “They're guests in our neighborhood and they have basically taken over.”
Joe further revealed the extent of the disturbances caused by the migrants.
He stated that prostitutes can be seen leaving the building in the mornings, while the nights are filled with noise, starting at around 10 o'clock and lasting until 4 in the morning.
The migrants also engage in activities such as playing loud music and racing motocross and motorbikes on the streets.
Joe emphasized that if he had experienced these conditions while raising his daughters, especially Lady Gaga, he would not have chosen to live in New York.
According to Joe, the residents of the neighborhood were not given any prior notice about the establishment of the migrant shelter, while the dormitory students at the American Music and Dance Academy were given only two weeks' notice to vacate their premises.
He estimated that about 500 migrants are currently living in 400 rooms, which only provide enough space for a bed and refrigerator.
They all share bathroom facilities, similar to a typical college dormitory setup.
Joe clarified that his concern is not with the presence of migrants in his neighborhood but rather the lack of action taken by the city to address the emerging issues.
He believes that most of the 500 individuals residing in the shelter are good people but emphasized the need for proper management, including security measures, police presence, and a code of conduct.
As the board president of his building, Joe, along with other neighboring residents, is actively lobbying City Hall to improve policing and supervision during the migrants' stay.
He also suggested that the city should have temporarily suspended its “sanctuary city” status until sufficient housing was available, proposing the use of cruise ships as a more controlled environment.
Joe criticized the city's significant expenditure on the current situation, suggesting that the funds could have been better utilized for affordable housing initiatives.
