Catherine Zeta-Jones, aged 54, and Michael Douglas, aged 79, are on the brink of celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary, with their bond now described as “stronger than ever” after a temporary separation.

The couple first crossed paths at the Deauville Film Festival in 1998 and exchanged vows at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in November 2000.

While they often grace red carpets together, fans might not recall when the pair, parents to son Dylan, 22, and daughter Carys, 19, revealed their decision to take a break in 2013.

A statement from Catherine's representative at that time read, “Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.

There will be no further comment.”

Michael referred to it as “a little bump in the road” during an interview with Event magazine in 2015.

Speculation arose that the split was connected to his tongue cancer diagnosis, which he linked to oral s=x.

Expressing regret, Michael explained, “I so regretted any embarrassment that it caused Catherine and her family.”

He clarified his intent, stating, “What I was trying to say was that there is a s–ually transmitted virus called HPV, but there is a vaccination that they recommend to all kids before they become s–ually active so they don't catch HPV, which is a cause of certain types of cancer – cervical cancer, tongue and throat.”

Reflecting on their errors, Michael hinted at taking Catherine for granted, noting, “First you have to admit that you made a mistake, then dealing with it is easy.

Of course, it's important to make mistakes, as long as you grow from them.”

He highlighted the shift in priorities with age, emphasizing valuing family over strangers' opinions.

The separation was brief, as Michael disclosed the subsequent month that they were in the process of resolving their issues, according to People magazine.
