In a surprising turn of events, the family of Oscar Award-winning actress Loretta Young has come forward with a new secret about her daughter's paternity.
Nearly 15 years after it was revealed that fellow Hollywood legend Clark Gable fathered her child, it has now been disclosed that the conception was the result of rape.
During an interview with Buzz Feed, Linda Lewis, Young's daughter-in-law, shared that Young first learned about the term “date rape” while watching “Larry King Live” in 1998.
Lewis explained to her that it didn't have to be a violent act, but rather when a person's “no” is not respected.
Young allegedly responded by revealing that this was exactly what had happened between her and Gable.
This revelation comes 80 years after Young starred alongside Gable in the film “Call of the Wild” at the age of 23.
Following their on-screen romance, Young gave birth to a daughter named Judy less than a year later.
However, it wasn't until 2000, in her memoirs, that Young confessed that Gable was the father of her child.
As a devout Catholic, she had faced rumors and criticism for years regarding the affair and the resulting “love child.”
According to Lewis, it was well-known that Young had developed feelings for Gable, who was married at the time and 12 years older.
Lewis mentioned that Young used to say that she fell a little bit in love with each of her co-stars.
The alleged rape occurred while the film crew was traveling back to Hollywood on a train.
Gable reportedly snuck into Young's compartment and took advantage of her.
Despite feeling humiliated, Young continued to work with him, as she had been trained since childhood to put on a brave face.
Judy Lewis, Young's daughter, expressed her disappointment that her mother never admitted to being her birth mother.
Both Gable and Young denied any romantic relationship, but it was Young who went to great lengths to keep their secret hidden from the public and her film studio.
Young organized numerous public events and interviews during the early months of her pregnancy to explain her need for rest later on.
She then went on a long overseas trip with her mother, claiming illness upon her return.
Young gave birth to Judy in a secluded Los Angeles cottage, with her doctor using chloroform to mask the sounds of labor.
While the birth remained concealed, the challenge of raising the child posed another dilemma.
Young decided to give the baby, whose mother's name was falsely listed on the birth certificate, to an orphanage.
At 19 months old, Judy was formally adopted by her biological mother.
For the next 30 years, Judy's life was built on lies and secrets.
It wasn't until shortly before her wedding day that she accepted Gable as her father, based on rumors and physical resemblances.
Judy Lewis, also known as “the Secret Daughter of Hollywood,” passed away in 2011 at the age of 76.
In her memoir “Uncommon Knowledge,” published in 1994, she expressed her disappointment that her mother never revealed the truth about her adoption.
Young refused to speak with her daughter for three years after the publication of her memoir.
However, in 1998, she reportedly began to consider that the events of the 1930s were not her fault.
Ultimately, Young chose not to discuss the matter with her daughter before her death, believing it wouldn't benefit Judy.
The family's revelation sheds new light on the complicated and painful history surrounding Loretta Young and Clark Gable's secret love child.
