The planned auction of a controversial s=x tape allegedly featuring Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, and his brother Robert Kennedy has been called off.
The tape was confiscated by authorities in Tulare County, California from its owner, a former Hollywood bodyguard turned collector, who had defaulted on a significant court debt.
The auction was scheduled to take place today but was canceled after the owner, William Castleberry, settled his $200,000 debt with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department.
Castleberry, who owed the amount from a previous legal judgment, had his costs covered by an anonymous benefactor once news of the auction surfaced.
According to reports, the 8mm home movie purportedly shows Monroe engaging in intimate activities with the Kennedy brothers.
Castleberry claimed that he refrained from making the tape public out of consideration for Monroe's ex-husband, Joe DiMaggio.
Castleberry recounted his distress over losing possession of the tape after being unable to meet a sudden financial demand prompted by a separate legal matter.
His attorney, Ryan Sullivan, mentioned finding an 8mm film canister during the repossession process at Castleberry's residence, which was handed over to the authorities.
Despite Castleberry's assertions about the tape's contents, Sullivan emphasized that he had not personally viewed the footage and could not confirm its authenticity.
The collection, including the contentious tape, was set to be auctioned with a starting bid of $200,000 to settle Castleberry's outstanding debt.
