Mark Wahlberg, a well-known actor, has faced backlash for his involvement in racist hate crimes during his teenage years.
Recently, he was criticized for presenting an award to the predominantly Asian cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once.
This incident has brought back attention to Wahlberg's history of racially motivated attacks, including assaulting two Asian men.
The 51-year-old actor handed out awards to the cast members on Sunday, marking 35 years since he was convicted of attacking the two Asian individuals.
In the 1980s, when Wahlberg was a teenager living in Boston, he was charged twice for race-related crimes.
In 1986, at the age of 15, he and three friends were accused of throwing rocks at black children while using racial slurs.
After being stopped by an ambulance driver, Wahlberg continued his harassment by targeting another group of mostly black children the following day.
Two years later, in 1988, he assaulted two Vietnamese men while under the influence of drugs, using derogatory language towards them.
Wahlberg physically attacked one of the victims with a wooden stick and punched the other in the eye.
Due to his racial slurs and violent actions, Wahlberg was found guilty of violating the civil rights of the victims.
A civil rights injunction was issued against him and two friends, which led to legal consequences.
Despite facing charges of attempted murder, Wahlberg pleaded guilty to felony assault, claiming that his actions were not racially motivated but influenced by intoxication.
As a result, he was sentenced to two years in prison, serving only 45 days.
In 2014, Wahlberg sought a pardon for the second attack to clear his criminal record, but later withdrew the request, stating that he had worked towards personal growth and redemption over the years.
Additionally, he expressed regret for his past actions and aimed to be a positive role model for his children and others.
Despite his attempts to move on from his troubled past, Wahlberg continues to face criticism for his previous offenses.
His recent involvement in award presentations and public appearances has reignited discussions about his past behavior, prompting mixed reactions from the public.
The actor's journey from a troubled youth to a successful Hollywood star remains a topic of debate, with some advocating for forgiveness and second chances while others question his sincerity and intentions.
