Actor Martin Freeman has publicly criticized Jim Carrey for his method acting in the film Man on the Moon, labeling it as “selfish” and “narcissistic.”
Freeman, known for his role in Sherlock, expressed his disapproval of Carrey's immersive acting style that involved staying in character for the entire four months of filming the 1999 movie.
Carrey, who portrayed entertainer Andy Kaufman in the biographical film, insisted on being addressed only as his character, Andy, even off-camera.
Venting his frustration, Freeman remarked, “It was the most self-aggrandising, selfish, and narcissistic behavior I have ever witnessed.
Celebrating or endorsing such conduct is simply absurd.”
During an episode of the Off Menu podcast, Freeman expressed his disbelief in the concept of fully embodying a character, arguing that actors should remain open to real-life experiences on set.
The Hobbit star emphasized the importance of staying connected to reality and criticized Carrey's approach as amateurish and unprofessional.
In Freeman's view, Carrey's commitment to method acting crossed boundaries and should have resulted in repercussions, suggesting that if it were anyone else, they would have faced consequences for such behavior.
Man on the Moon portrays Andy Kaufman's life story, depicting his rise to fame from childhood through his career in comedy clubs and television appearances.
The film also features performances by Danny Devito, Courtney Love, and Paul Giamatti alongside Carrey in the lead role.
