In a missed opportunity that has become the stuff of legend, it has been revealed that Matt Damon turned down a chance to star in James Cameron's groundbreaking film, ‘Avatar', back in 2009.
Instead, the role went to Sam Worthington, catapulting him to stardom.
While Damon has since found success in his own right, accepting the role would have earned him a staggering $250 million, adjusted for inflation.
As ‘Avatar' remains the second highest-grossing movie of all time, Damon has been repeatedly asked about his decision, to which he simply responds, “I will go down in history.
You will never meet an actor who turned down more money.”
During a recent interview with BBC Radio, James Cameron addressed the topic when questioned by journalist Ali Plumb.
It was revealed that Damon declined the offer due to prior commitments.
At the time, Damon was already a well-known name thanks to his role in the ‘Bourne' franchise.
Cameron expressed his thoughts on the matter, acknowledging that Damon may regret his decision.
However, he also reminded everyone of Damon's status as one of the biggest movie stars in the world and encouraged him to move on.
While there won't be a producer gig offered to Damon in any of the ‘Avatar' sequels, Cameron did express hope for a cameo appearance, stating that it is necessary to restore equilibrium to the world.
As the highly anticipated sequel to ‘Avatar' continues its successful run at the box office, grossing nearly half a billion dollars within the first four days, the film still faces the challenge of breaking even.
With production costs matching the box office earnings, repeat business will determine the ultimate fate of the movie.
Cameron has set a high bar, stating that the film must surpass $2 billion to be considered a success.
Anything less, even if it crosses the $1 billion mark, could potentially label ‘Avatar: The Way of Water' as a flop.
This is particularly crucial as Cameron has plans for two more installments and requires the financial backing to bring them to life.
