Matthew McConaughey, known for his adventurous lifestyle, shares a remarkable incident from his past where he faced arrest in Austin, Texas for engaging in a unique activity – playing the bongo drums completely n^ked.
In his recently released memoir, “Greenlights,” McConaughey delves into the night of 1999 when he found himself immersed in an intense bongo drum session after partying for over 30 hours non-stop.
He clarifies that he was simply enjoying his own company when unexpectedly, two Austin police officers intruded into his residence.
Describing the situation, McConaughey narrates, “I was in the moment, savoring the African rhythms of Henri Dikongué echoing through my house.
I felt the urge to jam on my favorite Afro-Cuban drum, syncing with the blues before they reached Memphis.”
However, his peaceful time was abruptly interrupted by the unannounced entry of the law enforcement officials.
One of the officers, a robust individual resembling a Nebraska Cornhusker, discovered McConaughey’s identification and then came across the bongo drums.
With a sense of authority, the officer informed the actor of his charges, which included disturbing the peace, marijuana possession, and resisting arrest, as he restrained McConaughey forcefully.
Escort by the police out of his home, McConaughey, still unclothed and unwilling to accept his fate, attempted a daring escape by executing acrobatic maneuvers against the walls.
His optimistic yet futile plan involved a somersault backflip over the officer, aiming to impress them with his agility and evade the arrest.
Despite his efforts, the actor ended up spending a night in jail, only to be released the following day on bail.
Reflecting on his brief time behind bars, McConaughey remarked, “While not my choice for accommodation, it wasn’t a terrible overnight stay.”
Legal support was provided by Joe Turner, who previously represented Willie Nelson, and argued in court that the circumstances leading to the arrest were exaggerated and unreasonable, advocating for leniency.
Eventually, the judge agreed to dismiss most charges, except for a minor violation related to noise disturbance.
McConaughey paid a nominal fine of $50 for this offense.
Subsequently, merchandise sporting the phrase “BONGO n^ked” became a trend in Austin, reflecting the humorous aftermath of the incident.
In recent years, McConaughey has embraced a more settled life following his marriage to Camila Alves and the arrival of their three children.
