Mel Gibson, known for his roles as a strong and heroic figure in films like Braveheart and The Patriot, has seen a significant shift in his image.
Once a celebrated actor, Gibson’s star has dimmed due to various controversies, including accusations of anti-Semitism and domestic battery.
Adding to his troubles is the physical decline of his body.
In an effort to accurately portray an overweight Santa Claus in the 2020 film Fatman, Gibson committed to putting on weight.
However, he almost went overboard with his transformation.
Directors Eshom and Ian Nelms intervened and advised him against becoming obese, reminding him that the film’s title doesn’t dictate his body size.
Despite concerns about his appearance, Gibson successfully embodied the tired and beleaguered Father Christmas in the gritty and grounded depiction of the character.
The directors were drawn to casting Gibson primarily because of his white, long beard, which perfectly suited the role.
The Nelms brothers had their hearts set on Gibson since they saw him during a Q&A session promoting Hacksaw Ridge in 2016.
His passionate speech and worn-out demeanor resonated with them, leading them to believe that he was the perfect fit for Fatman.
Unfortunately, Fatman didn’t have the desired impact on Gibson’s career or reconnect him with Hollywood.
With limited theatrical release and earning only $1.3 million, the film received negative reviews from both critics and audiences.
Although Gibson’s image has been tarnished by controversies, it’s important to recognize the talent and success he achieved in his earlier films.
While his recent projects may not have garnered the same level of acclaim, Gibson’s portrayal of Santa Claus in Fatman showcases his commitment to his craft.
For those interested in watching Gibson’s transformation into Santa Claus, Fatman is available on Amazon Prime Video.
