Hollywood actor Michael Douglas recently shared his harrowing experience with cancer at the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies 5th World Congress in New York City.
In his speech, Douglas revealed the fear and uncertainty he faced upon learning that he had stage four cancer in 2010.
Recalling the moment of diagnosis, Douglas expressed his shock and disbelief.
He admitted that his initial knowledge about stage four cancer led to a terrifying realization.
The renowned actor described it as one of the scariest moments of his life.
Douglas went on to reveal that he had been misdiagnosed three times before finally receiving confirmation that he had cancer.
Initially experiencing gum pain behind his molars, it took a CAT Scan to confirm his doctor's suspicion.
Subsequently, Douglas made the decision to seek treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, which was conveniently located near his home.
During his treatment, Douglas underwent seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy.
He likened the experience to descending into the seven circles of hell, as each week brought him lower and made him feel worse.
Despite the grueling process, he chose not to have surgery that would have required a feeding tube in his stomach, as it would have affected his ability to swallow and taste in the future.
As a result of this decision, Douglas lost a significant amount of weight, approximately 40 pounds.
However, he worked closely with a nutritionist to ensure he maintained a healthy weight.
He also credited his medical team for their honesty throughout his treatment, stating that their straightforwardness helped him maintain a sense of control.
The doctors and nurses at Sloan Kettering had warned Douglas that his recovery would not be immediate.
They informed him that there would be an additional five weeks of feeling unwell before any improvement could be expected.
Douglas likened his approach to that of a soldier, mentally preparing himself for the battle ahead.
He embraced the challenge and focused on toughening up for the treatment and eventual recovery.
Douglas's candid account of his cancer journey serves as an inspiration to others facing similar struggles.
His resilience and determination highlight the importance of having a supportive medical team and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the treatment process.
By openly sharing his story, Douglas continues to raise awareness about cancer and encourages others
