Michael Douglas, renowned actor, recently revealed that he was advised by his doctor to misrepresent his type of cancer.
Although he publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis, Douglas admitted during an interview with Samuel L. Jackson on the British talk show “This Morning” that he had not been entirely forthcoming about the nature of his disease.
For nine months, Douglas had been informed by doctors that he was suffering from a mere infection and prescribed antibiotics.
However, it was later discovered that he had a tumor at the base of his tongue.
Upon receiving the proper diagnosis, his doctor recommended that he inform the public that he had throat cancer instead of tongue cancer.
Douglas vividly recalled his doctor's warning about the potential consequences of surgery: “If we do have to do surgery, it's not going to be pretty.”
This operation carried the risk of him losing part of his jaw and tongue.
In light of this, the doctor suggested that Douglas misrepresent the type of cancer he had, a suggestion which the actor reluctantly agreed to follow.
Throughout his treatment, Douglas faced the additional challenge of his children witnessing sensational headlines about his emaciated appearance as he underwent seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy.
Reflecting on this difficult period, he admitted to Jackson that “I looked pretty weird.”
However, when he cautioned his 13-year-old son, Dylan, about potentially distressing magazine covers, he was surprised to find that Dylan was already aware of the tabloid tactics.
Dylan astutely asked, “You mean like the story when you had three weeks to live, Dad?”
