Michael Douglas recently shared his experiences as a parent later in life during an interview with the Telegraph.
The 79-year-old actor discussed the challenges he faced while raising children well into his 70s.
In one particular incident, Douglas recalled being mistaken for his child's grandfather instead of their father during a visit to their college campus.
Expressing his frustration over the misunderstanding, Douglas humorously recounted how he had to clarify that it was not a grandparents' event but a parents' day.
He emphasized, “I am a parent!”
highlighting the awkwardness of the situation and calling it “a rough one.”
With two children, son Dylan aged 23 and daughter Carys aged 20, from his marriage of nearly 25 years to actor Catherine Zeta-Jones, Douglas also has an older son, 45-year-old Cameron Douglas, from his previous marriage to Diandra Luker.
Reflecting on his experience as a father for the second time at an older age, Douglas admitted that he has been able to be a better parent to his younger children than he was to Cameron.
Douglas acknowledged the challenges his eldest son faced due to his own career demands, which left him feeling overwhelmed and unable to prioritize family.
However, with Zeta-Jones, Douglas found a renewed focus on family and parenting, emphasizing the joy and fulfillment that his younger children bring into their lives.
While initially struggling to keep up with the energy of Dylan and Carys in their youth, Douglas shared that he now appreciates the quieter moments as an “empty nester” alongside his wife.
Celebrating their enduring relationship, Douglas expressed his gratitude for the happiness and contentment that his children have brought into their lives, describing them as “extraordinary beings.”
Douglas and Zeta-Jones first crossed paths in 1999 at the Deauville American Film Festival before tying the knot a year later at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
Their relationship has been marked by public displays of affection, with Zeta-Jones often sharing heartfelt posts on social media to commemorate milestones in their marriage.
In a tribute marking their 23rd wedding anniversary, Zeta-Jones posted a series of photos capturing their journey together, including images from their wedding day and subsequent years.
Jokingly referring to Douglas as a potential Nobel Peace Prize recipient, she playfully teased him with a humorous caption expressing her love and admiration for her husband.
Despite the noticeable 25-year age gap between them, Zeta-Jones has embraced their unique dynamic and openly shared anecdotes about their enduring love story.
During a television appearance, she lightheartedly mentioned their shared birthday and highlighted the significant age difference between them, adding a touch of humor to their long-standing relationship.
