In the wake of Kirk Douglas' death in 2020 at the age of 103, discussions about Natalie Wood resurfaced on Twitter.
Two years prior, Natalie's younger sister, Lana, had claimed on a podcast that Natalie, then 16 years old, had been raped by a “big star” at the Chateau Marmont hotel.
Speculations linking Douglas to Natalie's assault had circulated for some time, but the identity of her alleged abuser remained unknown—until now.
Lana reveals in her upcoming memoir, “Little Sister: My Investigation Into the Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood,” set to be released on November 9, that she vividly remembers the night Natalie was dropped off at the entrance of the Chateau Marmont.
According to Lana, their mother, Maria Zakharenko, had arranged a meeting between Natalie and Douglas, hoping that his influence would open doors for her.
Lana recalls being awakened by Natalie slamming the car door shut and noticing her disheveled appearance.
Natalie seemed visibly upset, and Lana's attempts to eavesdrop on their conversation were unsuccessful.
At that young age, Lana wasn't privy to the details of what had transpired.
It wasn't until both sisters were adults that they broached the subject.
Natalie confided in Lana about the rape, describing it as a terrifying and confusing experience.
They decided together not to publicly accuse Douglas, fearing it would tarnish Natalie's reputation in Hollywood.
Maria advised Natalie to “suck it up,” according to Lana.
Douglas briefly mentions Natalie in his 1988 memoir, “The Ragman's Son.”
He recounts the first time he met Natalie, when a young girl wearing a suede jacket approached him for an autograph.
The woman driving the car introduced Natalie as her daughter, noting that she was also in the movies.
Douglas recalls encountering Natalie several times afterward until her untimely death in a tragic accident.
The mysterious circumstances surrounding Natalie's death have captivated both the public and authorities for over four decades.
In 1981, she drowned off Catalina Island after disappearing from the yacht she shared with her husband, Robert Wagner.
Doubts about the events leading up to Natalie's drowning led the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to reopen the investigation in 2011.
The coroner subsequently changed the cause of death to “drowning and other undetermined factors.”
In 2018, Wagner became a person of interest in the case, and Lana herself has questioned his possible involvement.
However, Wagner has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Lana had kept Natalie's secret hidden from the world until now.
With both Douglas and Natalie deceased, she believes it is time to share the truth.
In response to the allegation, Kirk's son, Michael Douglas, expressed his wishes for both individuals to rest in peace.
