Steven Spielberg, renowned filmmaker and co-director of the anthology film Twilight Zone: The Movie, recently reflected on a haunting incident that occurred during its production in 1982.
This unfortunate event resulted in the death of three actors, including two children, and continues to be remembered as one of Hollywood's darkest moments.
Twilight Zone: The Movie, co-directed by Spielberg, John Landis, Joe Dante, and George Miller, received mixed reviews upon its release and performed moderately at the box office.
However, it is not the film's reception that has left an indelible mark in people's minds.
The incident in question, known as the Twilight Zone accident, took place during the filming of Landis's segment.
Two child actors, who were hired illegally, and actor Vic Morrow lost their lives in a tragic helicopter stunt gone wrong.
When questioned about this shocking mishap, Spielberg expressed deep regret.
It is also reported that Spielberg was so disturbed by the incident and how Landis handled the situation that he ended their friendship and called for significant changes in the industry.
A Shocking Hollywood Tragedy Due to Lack of Safety Precautions
On July 23, 1982, tragedy struck during the production of the Time Out segment directed by Landis.
Vic Morrow and child actors Myca Dinh Le (aged 7) and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (aged 6) lost their lives.
This particular part of the film involved intense stunts and spectacles.
In a specific sequence, Morrow's character found himself in the Vietnam War, tasked with protecting two Vietnamese children from a pursuing U.S. Army helicopter.
During the filming of this action-packed scene at Indian Dunes, Valencia, California, a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter crashed.
The helicopter, hovering near a debris mortar used for special effects, lost control due to poor coordination and reckless planning.
When the device exploded, it damaged the rotor blades of the helicopter.
The aftermath was devastating.
While crossing a shallow river, Morrow and the two children were struck by the crashing helicopter.
Morrow and Myca Dinh Le were decapitated by the rotor blades, while Renee Shin-Yi Chen was tragically crushed to death.
Investigations revealed that the involvement of the child actors on set was illegal.
They were compensated off the books, allowing the production to evade California's regulations against child labor.
California labor laws require the presence of a teacher or social worker and prohibit child performers from working near explosives or during nighttime.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m.
The incident sparked public outrage and led to legal complications for the production team, including director John Landis.
Deep Regret from Steven Spielberg
Following the heartbreaking tragedy, Steven Spielberg, the co-producer of the film and director of Segment Two, was approached by the press for his perspective.
Spielberg distanced himself from Landis due to the latter's alleged lackadaisical approach in handling the incident.
He expressed immense disturbance over what had transpired.
In Spielberg's own words, as reported by Rolling Stone: “No movie is worth dying for.
I think people are standing up much more now than ever before, to producers and directors who ask too much.
If something isn't safe, it's the right and responsibility of every actor or crew member to yell, ‘Cut!'”
Reports also suggest that Spielberg objected to Landis's use of live ammunition on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie.
The tragic accident raised important questions about filmmaking practices and the extent of a director's control over a project, particularly during the New Hollywood era.
It shed light on the unethical practices within Hollywood and serves as a cautionary tale illustrating the consequences of poor planning, coordination, and risk evaluation during movie productions.
Decades have passed since the incident, but its impact continues to resonate throughout the industry.
