In spite of her immense success, Oprah Winfrey's life has been marked by hardship.
She has bravely shared her experiences of s**ual abuse at a young age and has recently opened up about the baby she had when she was just 14 years old.
Years after this revelation, Oprah has provided more details about her baby, including his name, which has sparked curiosity among many.
Here is what we know.
What Happened to Oprah's Baby?
At the tender age of 14, Oprah gave birth to a baby boy.
Unfortunately, the baby passed away after spending several weeks in the hospital.
The exact cause of the baby's death remains unknown.
The news of Oprah's baby first came to light in 1990 when a relative disclosed the story.
Since then, Oprah has spoken about the devastation she felt following her baby's death.
In an issue of O Magazine in 2007, Oprah expressed her emotions, saying, “I took to my bed and cried for three days.
I felt devastated.
Wounded.
Betrayed.
How could this person do this to me?”
She also shared that before the public knew about her baby, she feared facing backlash and ridicule.
“I imagined that every person on the street was going to point their finger at me and scream, ‘Pregnant at 14, you wicked girl … expelled!'”
she explained.
However, revealing the secret eventually brought her freedom.
“And I soon realized that having the secret out was liberating,” she wrote at the time.
“What I learned for sure was that holding the shame was the greatest burden of all.”
In 2015, Oprah once again spoke about her son and disclosed the name she had given him.
What Name did Oprah Give Her Baby?
During a speaking engagement at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, towards the end of 2015, Oprah shared details about her tragic past.
She recounted an interview with a reporter prior to her visit to Australia, who suggested that she name the baby son who had passed away.
Oprah took this advice to heart and revealed, “So I have named him; I had a little boy named Canaan.”
She continued, explaining the significance of the name, “I did have a son.
And I named him Canaan because Canaan means new land, new life.”
Additionally, Oprah discussed the s**ual assaults she endured during her childhood.
“I was raped at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family member,” she shared.
These experiences have undoubtedly shaped her life and continue to influence her perspective as she achieves tremendous success.
Oprah Winfrey's journey is one of resilience and strength, as she overcame adversity and used her platform to inspire others.
