Renowned actor Michael Douglas, famous for his roles in movies like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, has recently disclosed that his throat cancer may have been caused by engaging in oral s-*.
In an open interview with the Guardian, Douglas, who is currently receiving acclaim for his portrayal in the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, shared insights into the origins of a condition that was deemed almost fatal when it was diagnosed three years ago.
When questioned about potential regrets regarding his past habits of smoking and drinking, commonly attributed to causing the disease, Douglas responded, “No.
Because without going into specifics, this particular cancer stems from HPV [human papillomavirus], which is actually a result of cunnilingus.”
The husband of Catherine Zeta Jones elaborated, expressing concerns about whether stress induced by his son's imprisonment could have contributed to triggering the cancer.
He further explained, “Yes, it's a s-*ually transmitted disease that can lead to cancer.
And if contracted, cunnilingus is also considered a beneficial treatment.”
At the age of 68, Douglas received his cancer diagnosis in August 2010 after experiencing prolonged oral discomfort.
Despite visiting multiple specialists who failed to detect the tumor and instead prescribed antibiotics, it was only when he consulted a doctor in Montreal recommended by a friend that the issue was identified.
Following a biopsy, a walnut-sized tumor at the base of his tongue, previously overlooked by other doctors, was discovered.
Subsequently diagnosed with stage four cancer, often deemed terminal, Douglas underwent an intense eight-week regimen of chemotherapy and radiation.
He opted against using a feeding tube, enduring a liquids-only diet that led to a weight loss of 20kg (45lb).
Reflecting on his journey, Douglas shared, “That was a challenging experience.
It really takes a toll on you.
Additionally, the extensive chemo treatment depleted my strength and vital nutrients.”
Fortunately, the treatment proved successful, and Douglas is now over two years free from cancer.
He undergoes check-ups every six months, noting that “in the case of this cancer, recurrence is uncommon, with a 95% rate of non-recurrence.”
Previously, Douglas's cancer was presumed to be a consequence of his history of smoking and heavy drinking.
In 1992, he was hospitalized for addiction, with speculations arising that it was related to s-*, though Douglas refuted these claims, stating it was specifically for alcohol abuse.
He has also acknowledged engaging in recreational drug use.
HPV, known as a s-*ually transmitted virus associated with cervical and anal cancer as well as genital warts, is increasingly recognized as a factor in oral cancers.
Some experts attribute shifts in s-*ual practices, particularly the rise in oral s-*, to this trend.
Changes in s-*ual behavior may be influenced by cultural factors or concerns regarding the safety of penetrative s-* following the Aids epidemic.
Dr. Mahesh Kumar, a consultant head and neck surgeon in London, highlighted a significant surge in cases of this type of cancer over the past decade, predominantly affecting younger individuals.
Studies have indicated that a considerable percentage of oral cancer patients, approximately 57%, are HPV-16 positive.
Kumar affirmed, “It has been scientifically established that HPV type 16 plays a key role in oropharyngeal cancer,” emphasizing improved survival rates among those with this form of cancer.
However, Kumar expressed doubt regarding Douglas's claim that HPV alone caused his cancer, raising skepticism about Douglas's assertion that cunnilingus could serve as a curative measure.
Despite Douglas's belief that increased exposure to the virus might enhance his immune system, medical experts suggest otherwise.
Dr. Ann Robinson, a general practitioner, raised questions about how validating this association could impact the distribution of the HPV vaccine, which is currently limited in the UK.
She emphasized the importance of promptly referring patients diagnosed with oral cancer for early intervention, deeming detailed s-*ual inquiries premature at that stage.
Douglas, who shares two children with Zeta Jones and has an older son from a previous marriage, faced familial challenges when his son Cameron received a prison sentence in 2010 for drug-related offenses.
Subsequently, in 2011, Cameron's sentence was extended due to further drug possession charges while incarcerated.
Providing essential facts about HPV, it comprises over 100 strains that manifest differently in various parts of the body, with some being symptomatic, while most remain asymptomatic.
Transmission can occur through skin-to-skin contact or s-*ual activity, including oral s-*.
By age 25, an estimated 90% of s-*ually active individuals will have encountered some form of genital HPV.
Approximately 15 strains of HPV are linked to heightened cancer risks, although specific cancers cannot be definitively attributed to the virus.
The long-term impact of HPV increases cancer risk gradually over years and decades, rather than suddenly.
It's estimated that 25% to 35% of oral cancers are HPV-related, resulting in 1,500-2,000 diagnoses annually.
HPV-related oral cancers are most prevalent among heterosexual men in their 40s and 50s.
Vaccination programs for teenage girls aim to shield them from cervical cancers, potentially safeguarding future partners from HPV-induced oral cancers.
In a comprehensive interview conducted by Xan Brooks, Michael Douglas delved further into his cancer journey and the implications of his revelations.
