Lisa Niemi, the widow of Patrick Swayze, reflects on the heart-wrenching last words of the beloved actor before he slipped into a terminal coma.
In 2009, Swayze tragically passed away at the age of 57 after a grueling 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Niemi shares her memories of those final moments that she spent with him at their peaceful ranch.
Niemi tenderly placed a white rose on Swayze's chest and an amulet above the bed as a tribute.
She also arranged for his favorite horse, a stallion named Roh, to be present for a final farewell.
In her memoir titled “Worth Fighting For,” published in 2011, Niemi recounts the pain of those last moments.
She expresses, “My last words to Patrick were ‘I love you,' and those were his last words to me.”
She cherished the precious time they had together, holding his hand, listening to music, sleeping with her arm around him, and resting her head on his shoulder in silence.
On Monday morning, September 14th, in the tranquility of the moment, Niemi observed Swayze's delicate breathing.
She sensed that it was time.
Swayze may no longer be physically present, but Niemi reveals in a documentary from 2019 that she still feels his presence every day.
“He's still in my dreams,” she confesses.
Initially, she believed that the pain would help her hold onto him, but she soon discovered that it didn't.
However, she reassures herself by acknowledging that she hasn't lost him, which was her greatest fear.
While driving one day, Niemi heard Emmylou Harris's rendition of “Wayfaring Stranger” on the radio, and it brought her a profound realization.
She felt that Swayze was just on the other side, almost within reach.
She repeats, “I was driving down the road, and Emmylou Harris' version of ‘Wayfaring Stranger' was playing on the radio, and I really got that he's just on the other side.”
Although Niemi has found love again with jeweler Albert DePrisco, whom she married in 2014, she believes that one day she will be reunited with Swayze.
She affirms, “Yeah.
He'll be waiting for me, and that's a wonderful thing.”
It is worth noting that Swayze's smoking addiction likely played a significant role in his cancer diagnosis.
He had been a heavy smoker for over 40 years and admitted to consuming up to 60 cigarettes per day.
Even during his cancer treatment, he continued to smoke.
Swayze acknowledged that his chain-smoking habit probably contributed to the development of his illness.
