It has been a quarter of a century since the shocking murder of beloved comedian and actor, Phil Hartman, took place.
However, the exact details surrounding the events of that fateful night on May 27, 1998, and the early hours of May 28, still remain shrouded in mystery.
Despite the passage of time, the accounts provided by Lorraine Moss, the family’s babysitter, and those who were present that night, offer some insight into the tragic events.
Lorraine Moss, who was waiting for Phil to return home so she could leave, recalled the events leading up to the incident.
Phil’s wife, Brynn, had left for the evening, and he was supposed to take over the responsibility of caring for their children.
On that particular night, Brynn went out for drinks with her friend Christine Zander.
After spending some time with Zander, Brynn drove to the house of her friend and former lover, Ron Douglas, at approximately 10:15 p.m.
When approached for comment by ABC News, Douglas declined.
However, according to his statement to the police, Brynn consumed a few beers and expressed her grievances about her husband.
Douglas stated that Brynn left his house around 12:45 a.m., got into her car, and headed home.
At the time of the murder-suicide, both Sean and Birgen, the couple’s children, were present in the house.
Sean informed the police that he heard what he believed to be the sound of a door slamming.
Around 3:45 a.m., Ron Douglas was awakened by someone frantically banging on his front door.
It was Brynn, who confessed, “I killed Phil.
I don’t know why.”
Initially skeptical, Douglas’s doubts vanished when he saw a gun fall out of Brynn’s purse.
He promptly took possession of the weapon and secured it in the trunk of his car.
Brynn and Douglas separately drove to the Hartman residence, where Douglas discovered Phil’s lifeless body in his bed.
The police later determined that he had been shot three times.
After briefly stepping into the hallway to call 911, Douglas noticed that Brynn had locked herself in the master bedroom.
By this time, it was approximately 6 a.m., and the once-quiet Encino street suddenly became a hub of activity as police, news cameras, and curious onlookers arrived.
Douglas handed the gun over to the authorities, but it remained unclear if there were any other weapons inside the house.
In an effort to ensure the safety of nine-year-old Sean and six-year-old Birgen, they were swiftly removed from the scene just as another gunshot echoed through the house.
When the police finally reached the master bedroom, an eerie silence enveloped the room.
The discovery of the lifeless bodies of Phil Hartman and Brynn Hartman inside the bedroom left LAPD officer Daniel Carnahan deeply affected.
He described the scene as “one of the most tragic” he had witnessed.
Carnahan couldn’t comprehend how someone like Phil, who seemed to have achieved the American dream, could have it all taken away so suddenly and unjustly.
The children were placed under police custody following the incident.
Upon learning the news, Joel Diamond, a close friend of the family, requested permission to take the children out of the police station.
The officers agreed and suggested a nearby park.
