In a ceremony that captivated the world 41 years ago, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer exchanged vows on July 29, 1981.
The extravagant affair was hailed as a fairytale wedding and dubbed the event of the century.
However, recent revelations have shed light on the true nature of their union.
It is now known that Charles and Diana were not a perfect match.
Reports suggest that Charles harbored affections for another woman, Camilla Parker-Bowles, who later became his second wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.
She was present at St. Paul's Cathedral on their wedding day among a crowd of 3,500 guests.
According to The Mirror, on the eve of their nuptials, a 32-year-old Charles disclosed to the then 20-year-old Diana that he did not love her and did not wish to enter into marriage under false pretenses.
Understandably, this revelation left the soon-to-be Princess of Wales devastated.
In an ITV documentary titled The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess, Diana's astrologer, Penny Thornton, shared that Diana confided in her about this heart-wrenching exchange.
Thornton recounted, “One of the most startling things Diana revealed to me was that Charles informed her the night before the wedding that he didn't love her.
I believe Charles did not want to start the marriage on a deceitful note.
He aimed to be honest with her, though it proved devastating for Diana.”
Prior to their engagement in February 1981, Charles and Diana had only met a few times.
When asked if he was in love, Charles famously responded, “Whatever ‘in love' means.”
In contrast, Diana emphatically answered, “Of course.”
Thornton disclosed that Diana contemplated calling off the wedding at that juncture but ultimately decided to proceed despite doubts from both parties.
Renowned biographer Penny Junor, known for her works on the royal family, including The Duchess: The Untold Story, revealed that Charles too had reservations about the impending marriage.
Unfortunately, he felt it was too late to back out and proceeded with the union, hoping for a change in circumstances post-wedding.
The couple welcomed two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, by 1984.
However, strains began to surface in their relationship towards the end of the 1980s.
This culminated in their separation in 1992 and eventual divorce in 1996.
Following Diana's tragic demise in a car accident in 1997, Charles tied the knot with Camilla in 2005.
