Just a day before their much-anticipated wedding, Prince Charles, now known as King Charles III, delivered a heartbreaking confession to Princess Diana, leaving her utterly devastated.
The startling revelation was disclosed by Penny Thornton, an astrologer whom Diana sought advice from.
Thornton made this revelation in ITV's 2020 documentary titled The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess, marking 25 years since Diana's iconic interview on BBC's Panorama.
In her statement, Thornton shared, “One of the most astonishing things Diana confided in me was that on the night before the wedding, Charles expressed to her that he did not love her.”
She further explained, “It seemed that Charles did not wish to start their marriage on false pretenses.
He felt the need to be honest with Diana, which understandably shattered her.”
Adding to the account, Thornton mentioned, “At that moment, Diana contemplated not going through with the wedding; she pondered the idea of not attending at all.”
Diana and Charles' marriage faced tumultuous times, as revealed by Diana herself during her candid 1995 BBC interview with journalist Martin Bashir.
In the interview, Diana disclosed that both she and Charles engaged in extramarital affairs, with Charles reigniting a romance with his former flame and current wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles, ultimately leading to their separation in 1992.
When questioned by Bashir about Camilla's influence on their marriage breakdown, Diana famously responded, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” a statement that reverberated globally.
Furthermore, Diana acknowledged her relationship with British ex-cavalry officer James Hewitt, expressing her deep affection for him.
When asked about her faithfulness to Charles, she admitted her love for Hewitt, stating, “Yes, I adored him.
Yes, I was in love with him.”
The documentary by ITV insinuates that Bashir manipulated bank statements to coerce Diana into revealing details.
Last November, Diana's brother Charles Spencer publicly accused the BBC of sending him a partial apology regarding the use of forged documents to secure the pivotal interview with his sister.
Despite a 1996 internal BBC inquiry claiming the fabricated papers had no impact on the interview, Spencer dismissed these findings, alleging the network's “blatant dishonesty” in its actions.
Responding to these accusations, the BBC reiterated its apology to Spencer, affirming its commitment to thoroughly investigate any new information provided.
The broadcaster stated its willingness to delve into the matter once Martin Bashir, who is currently unwell, is available for questioning.
Diana's close friend Rosa Monckton attributed the BBC interview to Diana's tragic demise, suggesting that the interview precipitated her divorce from Charles, resulting in rushed decisions with long-term repercussions, such as losing her royal title.
Monckton criticized the BBC's role in the affair, likening their conduct to the intrusive paparazzi responsible for Diana's fatal car crash.
She emphasized that the BBC's deceitful behavior was equally condemnable.
In the wake of renewed scrutiny surrounding the Panorama interview, the BBC addressed queries regarding Bashir's involvement, emphasizing that the forged documents were presented to Earl Spencer and not Princess Diana.
Following a comprehensive independent investigation in 2021, retired judge Lord Dyson concluded that Bashir had acted deceitfully and falsified documents to secure the interview.
The report also highlighted the inadequacy of the BBC's 1996 internal probe.
Subsequently, both the BBC and Bashir issued apologies for their actions, extending them to relevant parties, including Prince William and Prince Harry.
