Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the renowned actress, recently shared her harrowing experience with a botched nose surgery that had a profound impact on her mental well-being.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the 40-year-old star revealed that she underwent the procedure in the early 2000s after doctors suggested removing a polyp from her nasal cavity.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the surgery, Chopra Jonas described it as a “dark phase,” where she discovered that the surgeons had made a mistake during the operation.
“My face looked completely different, and I went into a deep, deep depression,” she expressed.
The consequences were dire, leading to her being fired from three movies, making her believe that her acting career was over before it even began.
The Citadel actress confessed that her mental health deteriorated to the extent that she rarely left her house.
However, with the support of her father, who is a doctor himself, she mustered the courage to undergo corrective surgery.
“I was terrified, but he assured me that he would be by my side throughout the process,” she recalled.
His unwavering presence helped her rebuild her confidence.
In her memoir, Unfinished, Chopra Jonas previously divulged details about the botched nose surgery, describing how the results left her feeling devastated and devoid of hope.
The unfortunate turn of events occurred shortly after she rose to global fame by winning the Miss World 2000 pageant.
In the summer of 2001, she experienced persistent cold-like symptoms, which she initially believed to be a severe sinus infection.
As her breathing difficulties persisted, Chopra Jonas sought medical assistance from a doctor recommended by a family friend.
It was then that a polyp in her nasal cavity was discovered, necessitating surgical removal.
The actress assumed that the procedure, known as a polypectomy, was routine.
However, she soon realized that things had not gone according to plan.
“While removing the polyp, the doctor accidentally shaved the bridge of my nose, causing it to collapse,” she explained.
When the bandages were removed, both she and her mother were shocked by the drastic change in her appearance.
The consequences of the failed surgery left Chopra Jonas feeling devastated and hopeless.
She encountered further challenges due to her rising stardom, with the media labeling her “Plastic Chopra” after the procedure.
Despite pressure to provide an explanation for her altered appearance, she decided to draw a line and keep her personal journey private.
“I am an entertainer.
I get to choose what I share and when I share it,” she asserted.
To rectify the damage caused by the initial surgery, Chopra Jonas underwent multiple corrective procedures.
Now, she feels that her nose has returned to its natural state.
Although it took several years for her to accept the new reflection in the mirror, she has made peace with the slightly altered version of herself.
“This is my face.
This is my body.
I might be flawed, but I am me,” she proclaimed.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas's story serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges individuals face when dealing with the consequences of cosmetic procedures gone wrong.
Her resilience and determination to reclaim her sense of self are truly inspiring, showcasing the importance of mental well-being and self-acceptance in the face of adversity.
