Valerie Velardi, the first wife of Robin Williams, has shared her emotional story for the first time, shedding light on the challenges she faced due to his infidelity during their decade-long marriage.
In a recent television documentary honoring Williams, who passed away in 2014, Velardi disclosed how his newfound fame led him astray, making it difficult for him to remain faithful.
Reflecting on their relationship, Valerie expressed, “He adored women.
He truly did.
I comprehended that and wanted him to experience that freedom.
However, I also longed for his presence at home.”
Their paths crossed when Williams, a struggling actor at the time, met Velardi in San Francisco back in 1976.
She recounted, “He was tending bar, exuding charm with a French accent.
After a playful exchange and a kiss, I knew our encounter was not a one-time event.”
The breakthrough in Williams' career came when his comedic talents caught the eye of the creator of Happy Days, leading to a guest appearance as an alien in 1978, fulfilling a request from his Star Wars enthusiast son.
In 1983, Valerie gave birth to their son Zak, who shared his heart-wrenching experience coping with his father's tragic suicide.
Seeking solace, Zak, guided by Robin's close friend Bobcat Goldthwait, immersed himself in the waters where his father's ashes were scattered.
Zak reminisced, “Following my father's demise, emotions ran high, leaving me numb.
Jumping into the ocean felt like a therapeutic gesture, connecting me with my father's essence.”
Tragically, Williams received a misdiagnosis of Parkinson's disease prior to his death at 63, later revealed to be Lewy body dementia, causing memory lapses and severe anxiety, tarnishing his once-sharp wit.
His unwavering desire to entertain and bring joy to others became his driving force, with Zak reflecting, “His self-worth was intertwined with his ability to make people laugh.
Despite his global success, he battled feelings of inadequacy.”
The dissolution of Williams and Velardi's marriage ensued as he embarked on a romance with their son's caregiver, Marsha Garces, culminating in their separation.
Unveiling a lesser-known facet of Williams' upbringing, it was disclosed that he grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, within a seemingly affluent yet isolated household, concealing family secrets of half-siblings raised separately.
McLaurin, Robin's half-brother, shared insights into their unconventional family dynamic, acknowledging the blend of humor and melancholy that defined their upbringing, shaping their distinctive personalities.
