Rock Hudson, a prominent figure of the Hollywood Golden Age known for his roles in popular films like “Giant” and “Pillow Talk,” has had his legacy revisited by biographer Mark Griffin in the recent HBO documentary, “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed.”
Griffin made startling claims suggesting that Hudson made romantic overtures towards his co-star James Dean.
Despite his public image as a heterosexual heartthrob, Hudson, who passed away in 1985 due to complications from AIDS, had apparently hidden his homosexuality from the glitzy world of Tinseltown.
Griffin revealed in the documentary that during the filming of the 1956 drama “Giant,” Hudson was allegedly making advances towards Dean behind closed doors.
According to Griffin, Dean regarded Hudson with contempt, finding it hypocritical that Hudson maintained a straight persona in public while pursuing him privately.
Starring alongside Elizabeth Taylor in “Giant,” the film marked the final project for James Dean before his tragic death in a car accident in 1955.
The narrative unfolds as Dean's character clashes with a wealthy Texas rancher played by Hudson over several tumultuous years.
The biographer further insinuated that Dean had connections with a gay media executive associated with Hudson's agent, Henry Willson, hinting at hidden layers of sexuality within their social circle.
In a vintage interview dating back to 1983, Hudson expressed disdain towards Dean, attributing his casting in “Giant” to director George Stevens' preference for new and trendy talent.
Hudson's lukewarm feelings towards Dean persisted, mentioning that Dean had passed away before the completion of the film, leading him to hold back on further commentary out of respect.
The documentary also delved into Hudson's short-lived marriage to Phyllis Gates, who served as Willson's secretary.
Despite their marital bond from 1955 to 1958, Griffin disclosed that Gates remained oblivious to Hudson's true s-*ual orientation, a revelation that puzzled many considering the widespread knowledge within Universal Studios about Hudson's personal life.
Griffin's revelations shed light on the complexities surrounding Rock Hudson's private life and the intricate dynamics between the legendary actor, his co-stars, and the Hollywood landscape of the era.
