Romantic Drama “The Idea of You”: Anne Hathaway Dishes on Intimate Scenes

As the highly anticipated film “The Idea of You” gears up for its release this week on May 2nd, lead actress and producer Anne Hathaway sheds light on the approach taken to film the intimate scenes between Solène and Hayes.

The movie delves into the blossoming romance between 40-year-old gallery owner and single mother Solène (played by Hathaway) and 24-year-old boy band member Hayes (portrayed by Galitzine) after a chance encounter at Coachella.

In a conversation with Variety, alongside director Michael Showalter, Hathaway shares that they drew inspiration from Robinne Lee's novel, emphasizing a focus on Solène's pleasure in the portrayal of s–ual encounters.

Hathaway explains, “I was inspired by [Robinne Lee's novel on which the film is based] in terms of … what's the polite way of saying…Intimate acts!

In the book, Robinne describes intimate acts with the most unbelievable energy.

In their first physical s–ual connection, Hayes brings Solène to orgasm while [she is fully] clothed.”

Moreover, she elaborates, “That became our North Star in terms of expressing cinematic s=x in a way that makes it about her pleasure, while also making the point that a huge part of pleasure is giving someone else pleasure.”

Lee, the author of the novel that sparked the film adaptation, expounds on her approach to crafting intimate scenes, underscoring the significance of emotional vulnerability alongside physical intimacy between the characters.

In an interview with The Guardian, Lee states, “I had this rule that I wasn't going to make them n^ked on the page unless they were n^ked emotionally.

So in every s=x scene, he reveals something of himself to her or she to him – or something of herself to herself.”

Lee also shares her favorite scene from the upcoming movie, highlighting a moment where Solène confidently enters Hayes' hotel room, clad in a raincoat and a sheer dress, with a clear intent in mind.
