Actress Rose McGowan has filed a lawsuit in California federal court against Harvey Weinstein, attorneys David Boies and Lisa Bloom, as well as the private intelligence agency Black Cube.
In her legal action, McGowan accuses them of engaging in racketeering, violating the Federal Wiretap Act, invading privacy, committing fraud, and intentionally causing emotional distress.
The complaint begins by asserting that the case revolves around the sinister and unlawful actions of one of the most influential figures in America and his associates to silence victims of s–ual assault.
It also highlights the bravery exhibited by women and journalists who persisted in uncovering the truth.
According to McGowan, when Weinstein discovered her intention to disclose an alleged rape incident from 1997 in her unpublished memoir, his team resorted to various tactics.
They reportedly tried to steal her manuscript, offered hush money in exchange for her silence, and initiated a smear campaign to undermine her credibility, even allegedly planting drugs on her.
Furthermore, McGowan claims that a Black Cube operative secretly recorded her conversations, including parts of her unpublished book being read aloud, under the guise of interest in hiring her for public speaking engagements on women's issues.
In response to the lawsuit, Weinstein's lawyer Phyllis Kupferstein issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, asserting that McGowan's motives are driven by a pursuit of publicity and financial gain.
Kupferstein disclosed that McGowan had previously sought a substantial sum in exchange for refraining from making what they deemed baseless accusations, a proposition that was rejected.
The statement also implies that McGowan's actions were carefully timed for maximum impact, with the lawyer vowing to establish the lack of legal merit in the case during the legal proceedings.
Attorney Eric George, representing Lisa Bloom, expressed disappointment at McGowan's decision to involve his client in the lawsuit.
George emphasized the importance of facts and contended that there is no credible basis, neither factually nor legally, for the allegations leveled against Bloom.
He anticipates the opportunity to present their defense in court and correct any misconceptions that may have arisen.
As of now, David Boies has refrained from making any public statements regarding the lawsuit brought against him.
The legal battle initiated by Rose McGowan against Harvey Weinstein and the other defendants is poised to unfold in the courtroom,
