Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have recently shown signs of pulling back on their criticism of the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped away from royal duties in 2020, have been vocal in their critiques of the monarchy.
However, it appears they have now chosen to tone down their rhetoric after facing backlash for their relentless attacks.
According to an expert interviewed by the American newspaper Daily Express, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to have acknowledged that they may have crossed a line with their previous criticisms.
Their public condemnations of the Royal Family, notably during their interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the release of their Netflix documentary in 2022, and the publication of Harry Spears' memoir in 2023, have sparked controversy and divided opinions.
One of the most serious accusations made by the couple was regarding alleged concerns raised by a senior royal about their son Archie's skin color.
However, in a shift of approach in recent months, Harry and Meghan have opted for a more conciliatory stance.
Pauline McLaren, a Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway Management School, noted that the couple seems to have realized the need to dial back their criticism.
McLaren highlighted that Harry Spears' critical book about the Royal Family may have been a turning point for the couple.
She suggested that they have become more cautious in their public statements, possibly in an attempt to mend fences with the Royal Family.
The expert also pointed out that the repeated attacks on the monarchy could have tarnished Harry and Meghan's image, particularly in the United States where they reside.
The couple's popularity in the US has reportedly taken a hit, with satirical portrayals in popular culture, such as the well-known South Park episode, reflecting a shift in public perception.
Despite Americans' fascination with the concept of monarchy, the expert observed that Harry and Meghan's relentless criticism of the Royal Family might have alienated some of their supporters, especially following the controversial Netflix documentary.
Recent sightings of Harry and Meghan at the Invictus Games in Whistler, Canada, where Prince Harry gave an interview to Good Morning America, suggest a possible shift in their public approach.
The couple's presence at the event hints at a desire for reconciliation and a willingness to engage positively with the media.
