Sally Field is setting the record straight and dispelling the notion that she was the love of Burt Reynolds' life.
In his memoir “But Enough About Me,” published just three years before his death in 2018, Reynolds expressed regret for not fighting harder to maintain his relationship with Field, who is now 75.
However, Field recently revealed in an interview with Variety that Reynolds had fabricated the story that she was ever in love with him.
She admitted that being around him was not healthy for her.
Their romantic involvement supposedly began in 1977 while filming “Smokey and the Bandit,” and they had an on-and-off relationship until 1982.
They shared the screen in four films together.
According to Field, Reynolds had convinced himself that she held more importance in his life than he had initially believed, but she clarified that this was not the case.
She did not want to be part of his desire to possess something he lacked.
It was a situation she preferred to avoid.
When Reynolds passed away, Field did not attend his funeral.
However, she did release a heartfelt statement about him.
“There are moments in your life that leave an indelible mark, never fading away.
Even after 40 years, my time with Burt will always remain vivid in my memory.
He will forever hold a place in my heart and my personal history,” the actress shared with Page Six.
Reynolds died unexpectedly at the age of 82 due to health complications.
He was slated to appear in Quentin Tarantino's film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” before his passing.
Around the time Reynolds published his memoir, he expressed his longing for Field in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I miss her.
I believe she is one of the most underrated actresses.
She was the best actress I ever had the pleasure of working with,” Reynolds said in 2015.
He reiterated these sentiments to People magazine, stating that he adored Field and had a special bond with her mother as well.
“I really adored her.
It was genuine.
She is someone very, very special.
Her mother and I…
I loved her mother,” Reynolds revealed.
Reynolds even shared that Field's mother once told him, “I know you're going to break her heart, but please be gentle.”
Reynolds reassured her, saying, “I don't know how one could break someone's heart and be gentle, but I have no intention of breaking her heart.
You never intend to.”
In conclusion, Sally Field has set the record straight regarding her relationship with Burt Reynolds, denying being the love of his life.
Their connection was complex, but Field made it clear that it was not a healthy one for her.
Reynolds, on the other hand, openly expressed his admiration for Field, considering her the best actress he ever worked with.
