Supermodel Linda Evangelista appeared in a Manhattan court seeking $46,000 in childcare support from her ex-boyfriend, billionaire François-Henri Pinault, for their five-year-old son Augie.
According to Evangelista's lawyer, Pinault had initially wanted her to terminate the pregnancy.
Pinault, who admitted to breaking up with Evangelista upon learning of her pregnancy, is currently married to Hollywood actress Salma Hayek.
The ongoing trial aims to determine Pinault's financial responsibilities towards their child.
Evangelista, who gave birth to Augie after a short relationship with Pinault, is requesting the considerable sum to cover expenses such as a full-time nanny costing $7,000 per month and armed drivers amounting to $16,000 per month.
Pinault has criticized these demands, claiming that the money is for “mom support.”
Evangelista, on the other hand, argues that she requires this level of financial assistance due to her modeling and image-related work commitments.
During the trial, Evangelista's lawyer, William Beslow, recounted a conversation between the former couple in January 2006.
Pinault allegedly expressed his desire for Evangelista to terminate the pregnancy, but she decided to keep the baby.
Despite Pinault's lack of interest, Evangelista took it upon herself to support their child.
As the court proceedings unfolded, Evangelista arrived dressed professionally, ready to address the matter at hand.
Pinault, who began dating Hayek while Evangelista was pregnant, observed the proceedings with a bemused smile.
When questioned, Pinault admitted that he found out about Evangelista's pregnancy in early 2006 and subsequently ended their relationship.
He stated that they had only been dating for four months and that he did not know her well.
Pinault believed that Evangelista intentionally became pregnant and claimed no involvement in the decision to keep the baby.
However, he did acknowledge his responsibility by recognizing the child and later providing support.
When asked why he did not pay child support during the first years of Augie's life, Pinault responded that Evangelista had not asked, and he had not offered.
François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of PPR, which owns luxury brands such as Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, has an annual income and family estate valued at $11.5 billion.
Evangelista's lawyer emphasized that she is not seeking to improve her own lifestyle but rather maintain a reasonable standard of living for their child.
Pinault's lawyer, David Aronson, contended that Pinault had attempted to discuss child support payments with Evangelista's previous lawyers, but they did not respond.
He argued that most of the expenses Evangelista claims are unrelated to Augie but instead pertain to her own needs.
Aronson deemed the requested amount as excessive, given the wealth of both parties involved.
Evangelista will testify in the trial tomorrow.
If awarded the requested $46,000, it would set a new record for childcare payouts.
In addition to financial support, Evangelista also demands that Pinault provide a home similar to the $13 million California mansion he put in a trust for his daughter with Salma Hayek, Valentina.
As the trial continues, it remains uncertain whether Evangelista's demands will be met.
Judges typically consider the actual cost of caring for a child, rather than the parents' wealth.
Evangelista, who is worth $8 million and owns properties in New York City, has earned substantial income from her successful modeling career and endorsements.
