In a recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, Salma Hayek shared the emotional turmoil she faced while filming a love scene in the 1995 hit movie Desperado.
Hayek, known for her Oscar-nominated performances, recounted the challenges she encountered while shooting a romantic scene with her co-star Antonio Banderas, who portrayed the character El Mariachi alongside Hayek's role as Carolina, a book-loving woman with a revealing midriff.
Despite her excitement about working with Banderas under the direction of filmmaker Robert Rodriguez in the Mexican desert setting, Hayek revealed that the love scene was not originally part of the script.
It was added later at the studio's insistence after seeing the chemistry between the two actors during auditions.
Expressing her discomfort with the scene, Hayek confessed, “I had a really, really hard time with that…I don't enjoy the scene.”
She disclosed that she was taken aback by the unexpected nature of the intimate moment and the pressure it put on her during filming.
During the shoot, Hayek requested a closed set comprising Banderas, Rodriguez, and Rodriguez's then-wife, producer Elizabeth Avellán.
Despite the supportive environment, Hayek struggled to compose herself, breaking down in tears before filming commenced.
Reflecting on Banderas's professionalism and kindness, Hayek admitted feeling overwhelmed by his ease with the situation, contrasting it with her own unease.
She recounted moments of vulnerability and embarrassment, with Banderas expressing concern over her emotional state.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Hayek commended Banderas and Rodriguez for their understanding and support throughout the filming process.
She acknowledged their efforts to create a comfortable atmosphere for her, even as she grappled with her emotions.
In contrast to other famous on-screen romances, such as Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio's chemistry in Titanic, Hayek's experience filming the love scene in Desperado was marked by emotional intensity and personal struggle.
The scene was shot in fragments due to Hayek's difficulty maintaining her composure for extended periods.
Originally considered for another role, Hayek's portrayal of Carolina in Desperado catapulted her to stardom in Hollywood, showcasing her talent and versatility as an actress.
Despite the challenges she faced during the filming of the love scene, Hayek's performance resonated with audiences and established her as a formidable presence in the industry.
