Shelley Duvall’s 20-Year Hiatus: A Journey Back to Hollywood

The renowned actress recently disclosed the poignant reason behind her two-decade absence from the glitzy realm of Hollywood – her family.

In 2002, at the age of 73, Duvall made a significant decision to return to her roots in Texas.

This move was prompted by her brother's battle with spinal cancer and the gradual decline in acting opportunities that came her way.

Reflecting on this extended break, Duvall expressed, “It's the longest sabbatical I ever took, but it was for truly crucial reasons – to reconnect with my family.”

In an interview with People magazine, she was described as a blend of sharpness, earthiness, a touch of eccentricity, and occasional emotional depth.

Duvall's journey into the cinematic world commenced when the iconic director Robert Altman discovered her, casting her in the 1970 dark comedy “Brewster McCloud.”

Her career highlights include a notable role in 's “Annie Hall” and a stint as a host on “SNL.”

However, it was her acclaimed performance alongside in Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece “The Shining” that solidified her presence in the industry.

Additionally, she portrayed Olive Oyl in the live-action adaptation of “Popeye.”

As the flow of acting opportunities dwindled, Duvall made the pivotal choice to retreat to Texas, opting for a more private existence away from the public eye.

Although she maintained a low profile, Duvall briefly resurfaced in 2016 during an appearance on the “Dr. Phil” show, which received backlash for its handling of Duvall's fragile mental state.

During the interview, Duvall made intriguing statements, including her belief that her late co-star from “Popeye” was still alive, referring to him as a “shapeshifter.”

In a moment of clarity, she humorously exclaimed, “I need to get the Bermuda Triangle off of me because I do not want a hairy chest.

I'm not a Chia Pet.”

In 2021, she openly criticized Dr. Phil for what she perceived as exploitation of her vulnerability at the time, emphasizing, “I found out the kind of person he is the hard way.”
