Snoop Dogg Reflects on How His 1996 Murder Trial Shaped ‘Tha Doggfather’

's life took a dramatic turn in 1996 when he faced a year-long trial for murder.

Despite being acquitted, the experience had a profound impact on the West Coast rapper.

It was during this tumultuous time that Snoop released his second studio album, “Tha Doggfather,” which challenged his established image as a ruthless gangsta rapper.

In a recent interview with Jemele Hill, Snoop discussed how Death Row Records, his label at the time, wanted him to maintain his gangsta persona despite the personal turmoil he was going through.

However, Snoop's heart and spirit were not in a place to write violent lyrics after facing a murder case and realizing the importance of life.

He wanted to focus on living and being there for his family.

Contrary to expectations, Death Row actually encouraged Snoop to embrace his gangsta image.

But Snoop's near brush with imprisonment caused a significant shift within him.

He couldn't understand why the label didn't understand what he had been through and the weight he carried as a result.

Despite the label's skepticism, “Tha Doggfather” went on to achieve great success.

The album sold over two million copies and received a double-platinum certification from the RIAA.

It became a testament to Snoop's resilience and ability to create music that resonated with his fans.

Last year, made headlines when he acquired his former label, Death Row Records.

This year, he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album, “Doggystyle.”

To commemorate the milestone, Snoop has made the full original LP available for streaming and released special edition vinyls for purchase, including the track “Gz Up, H**s Down.”

Snoop's journey from the 1996 murder trial to the release of “Tha Doggfather” showcases his determination to stay true to himself and his music.

Despite the pressure to conform, he remained authentic and created an album that continues to resonate with fans decades later.

It serves as a reminder of the challenges Snoop faced and the impact they had on shaping his artistry.
