New York, USA – A recent court filing reveals that Sophie Turner, known for her role in “Game of Thrones,” found out about her husband Joe Jonas' divorce petition through media reports.
The documents, filed in a New York court on September 21, state that Turner was unaware of Jonas' decision until she saw news articles stating that he had filed for divorce in a Florida court.
The court filing stems from Turner's legal action against Jonas, who allegedly refused to return their two daughters' passports, prompting her to seek their return to England.
The documents also provide some insight into the breakdown of their marriage, revealing that Jonas filed for divorce on September 1, but Turner only learned about it from the media five days later.
According to the court documents, the couple had an argument on August 15, 2023, and Jonas filed for divorce against Turner on September 1, 2023, in Florida.
However, it wasn't until September 5, 2023, when Turner discovered through media reports that Jonas had initiated divorce proceedings.
The Independent reached out to representatives of Joe Jonas for comment, but no response has been received thus far.
On September 6, Jonas and Turner issued a joint statement announcing their divorce, putting an end to their four-year marriage.
The statement, shared on both their Instagram accounts, emphasized that the decision was mutual and requested privacy for themselves and their children amid various speculations surrounding their separation.
Turner took further legal action on September 21 by filing a petition for the return of their children to England.
The filing alleges that their daughters have been wrongfully retained in New York City, away from their habitual residence in the United Kingdom.
The documents state that the couple had established England as their permanent residence in April 2023 and were planning to purchase their “forever home” in December.
After Jonas filed for divorce, the former couple reportedly met on September 17 to discuss the separation and agreed that their daughters should return to England.
However, Turner claims in her petition that Jonas is withholding their passports and refusing to hand them over, which has led her to take legal action.
A representative for Joe Jonas explained that following his divorce filing in Florida, the court has already issued an order prohibiting both parents from relocating the children.
Turner was allegedly served with this order on September 6.
The representative added that Jonas and Turner had a cordial meeting in New York on Sunday, where she came to be with the children, and they have been with her since then.
Jonas believed that they had reached an understanding regarding co-parenting, but less than 24 hours later, Turner expressed her desire to permanently take the children to the UK.
Jonas's representative warned that complying with this request would violate the Florida court order.
