Sophie Turner, the well-known actor, reportedly found out about her impending divorce from her husband, Joe Jonas, through media reports.
This revelation came to light in a new petition filed by Turner’s attorneys in Manhattan District Court on Thursday.
On September 5, news broke that Joe Jonas had filed for divorce from Sophie Turner after four years of marriage.
The filing claims that the breakdown of their marriage occurred suddenly and unexpectedly.
According to the petition, Turner’s attorneys state that an argument took place between the couple on August 15, 2023.
Subsequently, on September 1, 2023, Jonas initiated divorce proceedings against Turner in Florida.
It wasn’t until September 5, 2023, when Turner discovered through the media that Jonas had filed for divorce.
However, a representative for Joe Jonas contradicted Turner’s claim, stating that she was indeed aware of his intention to file for divorce.
The representative explained that after multiple conversations with Turner, Jonas initiated the divorce proceedings in Florida, which he believed to be the appropriate jurisdiction for the case.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas began dating in 2016 when Turner was 20 years old and Jonas was 27.
They tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Willa, the following year.
Their second daughter was born in 2022.
The petition filed by Turner’s lawyers reveals that in April 2023, the couple agreed to permanently settle in England.
They were actively searching for a home in England as recently as July.
The plan was for them to raise their children together and create a beautiful life in the English countryside.
According to the filing, England is considered the children’s habitual residence, where they have become integrated into daily life.
This includes routine medical care, extracurricular activities, playdates, and nursery school.
Turner and Jonas had made arrangements for their children to join the Jonas Brothers on tour until August, while Turner finished filming a new drama series in England.
She had planned to reunite with her children in September.
However, Jonas filed for divorce in Miami, Florida, where the couple had previously owned a house.
They recently sold the property for $15 million, a move that Turner’s petition describes as part of their shared plan to settle their family in England.
A representative for Jonas stated that both Turner and Jonas are prohibited from relocating the children due to a court order in Florida.
In a statement, the representative also mentioned that Turner and Jonas had a cordial meeting in New York last Sunday, which gave Jonas the impression that they would work together to establish a cooperative co-parenting arrangement.
The representative emphasized that Jonas disavowed any statements made on his behalf that were disparaging towards Turner and that these statements were not consistent with his views.
Jonas’s main concern is the well-being of his children, and he hopes that Turner will reconsider her legal position and proceed in a more constructive and private manner.
As of now, Turner’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment from Insider.
